Full boat cover for our 26M 2012

Post by oceanview2 »

Would greatly appreciate any advice to assist our purchase of a new boat cover for our 2012 26M.
The boats in Marina del Rey on the trailer. We want to completely cover it stem to stern. And down to the Aluminum I-beams of the trailer. Realizing the prices will vary throughout the US, what can we expect to pay for it ?
Are the cover available through a supplier ?
Or is it best to have one custom made ?
Any suggestions regarding preferred materials ?
Here in southern California smog, jet soot, dust and UV are abundant.
We are looking for quality workmanship using good materials at a reasonable price. And what sort of things should we consider requesting when ordering a boat cover. The ideal would be a cover that will last many years.
What price could we being looking at ?
Thanks to all for any imput.

Look at http://thesailwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/web ... l&cart_id=
We have this cover, got it to tow our :macm: from CA to FL. Good workmanship looked like new after 3000 highway miles.
Highly recommended :)

I'm designing a "So Cal" cover for our boat--and by that I mean just a deck cover that can go on the boat with the mast up or down and which lays directly on the deck, not covering the mast or rigging. The guys in cold or wet weather have to worry about covering the entire boat, but all I'm trying to do is keep the sun off the raccoon stripes and the dirt off the deck.

It's going to be four pieces of sunbrella that will fasten together with grommet toggles: A bow/bullnose piece, foredeck to the mast foot, amidships from the mast foot to the companionway, and a cockpit cover. This way we can take the cockpit cover off, both the cockpit cover and the amidships cover, or the whole thing. The amidships cover will also function as a boom tent connecting to the lifelines, and the cockpit cover may in the future function as a bimini, although I'm not planning a frame for it yet.

The covers will overlap fore to aft so the sections won't catch wind while trailering.

The edges will have grommets, and I'll make small bungees that use a cow-hitch to the grommet down to a single hook. The hooks will fasten to the rub rail and the bungees will keep the cover under tension.

For distance trailering, I'll tie the covers to the trailer with 1/8th line every few feet.

Anyway, that's the plan. I'm going to make the patterns in February and should have it done by summer.

Very similar to what I'm going to do. And by me, I mean the admiral.

RussMT,

I just saw you post re PVC pipe and tarps. I use two tarps to cover our :macm: , but can discover a moderate sized swimming pool in the tarp after it rains. Your PVC pipe idea is a beauty and I'll humbly copy it! Well done.

Yeah Ix – it’s always better to have them learn on someone else’s boat :D . But I still have had some of my canvas "tweaked" in spite of that. (But not from that supplier, to be clear).

Hey Boblee – might be a compromize that the black will get hotter in the sun than lighter colours, but will also dry out quicker when it’s been rained on? :?:

the cover was designed for an X.
my upholstery guy does alot of marine canvas (and living room furniture).
it took him two weeks to build from the day we met. he doesn't have a template and i have since moved away from that area.
i suspect that any marine canvas laborer can do a far superior job to mine.

regarding black (vs other colors)...the area where we lived near Santa Barbara, CA and right on the water is a very moderate climate.
a high temp below 70 degrees most days, and a low rarely below 45 degrees in the winter. so the black attracting heat is not the problem.
it's the sea-birds marking their territory, the white splats on the black sunbrella.

plus, the black matches all the other black sunbrella on my X.

Hello,

I created templates and took measurements this fall and in the process of getting the cover fabricated in black/very deep blue.
I have measured to fabricate two covers - one for the fore-deck/saloon and one for the cockpit. The fore-deck/saloon cover will fold approx 6 inches down from the top of the companion way and will be held down by tie-cords through grommets. The cockpit cover will go over the crown of the companion way and aft towards the pedestal, covering the top of the aft seats. A slight alteration to the aft cover can also make this into a raised canopy with sealed tent but I need aluminum tubes for that project. I am still looking for a place to source Aluminum tubes that can be cut to size, and maybe bent in a pipe-bender.
