To get your Coast Guard license you need to document 360 days total and 90 days at (venue of choice) over the past three years....logbook is essential to document that!

I believe (US only) that 4 hours counts as a "day". :)

My sail log is drawing a little sailboat on the calendar each day I'm in the water. Each year I tell myself "Next year I'll keep a proper sail log" :? I start sailing in mid-April and my last day is early to mid-October. This year I was out on the water 41 times, a few more days than usual. This was my 5th season with the boat. For any new owners try to keep a sail log. I regret not doing so. Although I do have quite a few pictures it would be nice to have a written record about each day on the water. Oh, and by the way, NEXT YEAR I'LL KEEP A PROPER SAIL LOG  ....no seriously :D

$6 for the iPad. Seems to have everything I could think of for a log book app. Same author also has a free app in the iTunes store for the iPhone.

Matt
That looks like a pretty cool app, maybe I should swipe my wife's ipad.. :D The free iphone app looks like a game though, not the logbook app. Looks like there is one for 5 bucks but its hard to say if it has the same functionality as the ipad app. There is also a free charting app for ipad which might be good.

Stephen, what is the benefit of getting the coast guard license? I keep all my GPS logs so I could probably use that to prove time out sailing.

The basic CG Captain license or so-called "six=pack" actually lets you carry passengers for hire...Colonel (ret.) King knows much, much more about this than me, though.. 8) 8) 8)
