Who here actually keep up to date sail logs?

Post by Azzarac »

The other day I received an email from Photobucket telling me about a story contest they were holding and it gave me the idea that I could use this to integrate my Ship's Log with all my photos I have stored on there. Well, I have to say their story software isn't top notch stuff and I was beginning to wonder if it was worth the effort. I also began to wonder if I'm the only one out there that keeps a log since I can't recall anyone on here ever mentioning one. So I'm curious, does anyone write down their adventures anymore to aid the old memory later?

If your curious about our first season or just really bored with nothing better to do, you can find our log here:

I keep somewhat of a paper based log mostly to note the usage dates and nautical miles under the hull from the gps and also top speed as the gps sets it.
I also will/might note other mostly mechanical things such as the engine oil tank, the waxing interval, any unusual stuff seen etc, etc...

I am pretty good at keeping it going on 6 years now.

I too try to keep a written log of my sailing, expecially on multi-day cruises. Things I like to note are where I stayed (on anchor, marinas, ect.) as well as names of the people that I contacted to make reservations, etc. to make it easier for the next trip. Like said previously it also helps with dates of mods, maintinance, etc. I just turned 40 so I need a paper version of my memory these days.

I like the online version because I can add pictures... (words are good, but 45+ age needs pictures to help the memory kick back in... :? )

I"ve never kept a sailing log, as I see no point. My adventures are in my head, and I don't think anyone will ever care to read any I could write.

I do keep a flight log as required in aviation, and no one wants to read that, either...

For me, the living of life, contemplating the Big PIcture (whatever that is--ask Stephen Hawking, Kip Thorne, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Peter O'Toole...), what is the Cosmos, what and where am I in that, loving life, appreciating it, and trying to do something to make things better...that's what it's about.

Yes, I do think that's worth writing down and sharing--these things and more, as well as voyages--and I do value it when others do it. But I dont' actually do it as I don't see anyone ever reading it.

But I do enjoy having some tea while I listen to someone share.

:)

I had a Log book back in 1982 when I left Cape Cod for a round the world Cruise. I entered every day events and 8 mo. later after staying over The BVI's I gave up.
I now look back on my crossings and wish I had kept up on the Log book.
My log was entering every Sextant fixes for Lat. and Long. useing dead reconing.Days events and things that happen with the boat and surroundings.
Those days are long gone but still have my charted courses and 1200 mile off shore run from Beaufort to St. Thomas. Memory in 40 ft. waves for 3 days that I still think about .
I look at my hourly entry and trace back what I went tru.
Best part of my life.
Log books are in the past but you can always refer back to them. Don't think so in todays electronics.
Log books are best way to Navigate and to recover your history when your older.

Hello,
I made my own version of a logbook for which I print new pages out of card stock. I keep an every day log for when I'm prepping, maintaining, modifying, or traveling with the boat. I included an ALaska (Princess) cruise vacation too. Pretty much my water sports log. Been doing it since I bought, and was still waiting for, my boat in 1995. I have almost filled the second volume. I tend to log all the details and my wife logs all the experiences, moods, people etc. Makes for great reading in the winter. It's amazing how we forget pieces of things when recalling a story for friends but now days I keep the log at hand for reference. It also contains all the feelings of / about the experiences so it makes writing a script for the upcoming video a lot easier. :D

Now Duane Dunn prefers electronic logs cuz' he can share them with pics immediately and figures no one will ever read a paper log. I think my log will out live any digital storage as long as someone saves it for posterity after I'm gone. :P I'm sort of covered cuz' I also have the slideshows and video productions of my vacations too (complete with narration and original score). I know....................over kill.

Not over kill, your documents are saved, Paper documents are long lasting, longer than DVD's or other computer saveings. I still have my picture slides back in 1982 in excellent shape. I also have original slides back in 1965 that are in good shape.
Anything taken on my Iphone or camara is usually lost. Goes with changeing Camaras or Phones.
Yes you can save them but who does?
I still have my 286 dos and 386,and 3 others that I refuse to get rid of as they contain a part of my life.
When I retire next year they will give me a moment of looking past. The Log book will also remember when.

We usually keep more of a journal of our big trips (not on the boat), but since mentioning, it would be nice to keep one on the boat. It is funny how you forget the little things. Mostly the bad oddly enough :D We kept one from an almost 500 mile canoe trip a couple of years ago. I remember having a great time nice weather and a relaxing time, but according to my logs there were some choice words for the weather, among other things. It's funny to read now and see what kind of day me or the wife were having, how the weather was, or something funny that happened, it really has a way of bringing back the things you easily forget.

I started one when I first started sailing, but stopped after about 2 seasons. I do keep every GPS track of every sail and have them in a folder on my computer and a binder with printouts. The printouts sometimes have notes on them about unusual weather or events during the sail.
