I need a good mechanic to come to my boat in Marina del Rey

Post by gregor »

One of my wheels on my 1997 single axel trailer is frozen, possible wheel bearing rusted. I am not inclined to take this on myself and would pay to have it done - replace bearings and possibly the brakes, maybe replace with disk brakes. I have my boat on the trailer in Mast Up in Marina del Rey.

Gregor

I doubt your wheel bearing as seized...more likely the drum is stuck

Yea.. that would be my guess also. I'm not as mechanical as others here, but those drum brakes rust and seize up so easily. A good reason to switch to discs.

How big a job is it to switch out to disc brakes and any idea of what it might cost parts and labor.

I used this kit to replace my drums with disc brakes. http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Brakes/ ... 43100.html If you have a typical 3500 lb axle with 4-bolt flange for the drum brakes, this kit (there are other sources with similar kits) is easy to install.

You'll have to replace either the master cylinder OR the whole coupler (the kit in the link has the whole coupler) since drum and disc brake master cylinders are NOT the same.

It's easier to do without the boat on the trailer, otherwise you have to get under the boat and trailer to do the work. MUCH better without the boat. It took me a while to do the work since I didn't have a cutting torch, and the original coupler was welded on, but that would be no problem for a trailer shop.
