Fellow New Englander here. Sailing New England's 2nd largest lake, Moosehead, would be amazing. But I've always wanted to sail New England's largest lake, Lake Champlain in Vermont and Canada. Are you allowed to sail to the Canadian side and stop or do you need a passport? How would they even monitor you on such a large body of water?

Radar. They really do. You have to land and report in before anyone leaves the boat or......

If you sail into Canadian waters, but don't land, you have not been deemed to leave the Us, so no reporting necessary on the US side. I dont know the applicable Canadian regs.

Thanks for the info. Makes me think of things like if a very small thin boat could avoid radar or if a "stealth" boat could be built out of special materials to avoid radar like those "stealth" jets, lol!

F/up....the information on so called wet crossings ( where you cross the lake border but don't physically land) has received quite a lot of traffic on sailnet and SA :?

It looks like starting in 2011, Canadians were required to call in even if they crossed into US waters without landing, whereas US were not. Substantial fines and boat seizures are rumored, but as usual Sone of the stories reek of Internet legends.....

There is a documented incident of a Canadian guy in a fishing boat being fined 1000 CDN for this practice

So, the practices of customs and immigration are livng things and need to be researched in an up to date manner.

You need to understand two aspects as skipper

1 your home country requirements...which can change hour by hour..

2 Country of entry requirements....more happily set by international treaty, so can't change so easily.

As always be polite and professional at all interactions with officials and leave political speeches at home.

Americans...leave guns, especially handguns, at home. Massive fines.

If you have DUI or DWI convictions, you may be refused entrance into Canada...as in the whole country.

The Canadian parts of Lk Champlain are relatively small compared to the size of the whole lake. It's the NY side that you have to worry about... :D :wink:

I also live on a US/Canadian border lake (Rainy Lake) and sail freely between US ana CA. Its a very simple process to aquire the CA remote crossing permit for the year that allows you and listed family members to enter into Canada at will. On the flip side you then can get the I68 from the US that allows you to re-enter the US by checking via shore phone, cell phone etc. once you have both you can cross and land freely over border waters. It looks like the US to Canada route is simple, but Canadians coming to the US Waters, even without landing, have more policies to follow...

A very small thin boat that is invisible to radar is called a kayak. Kayakers have been used for stealth missions since World War II when several British soldiers paddled into Marseille harbor at night and attached limpet mines to a number of German warships. Today, many nations, including the U.S. have military personnel trained for similar duties.

Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine, Winter 2013 issue has an article on this boat. The are also videos online of its recent success/fail first launch.

Most picturesque anchorage on Lake Champlain for me was Quaker point. Outstanding sunsets over the Adirondacks!!! :macm: 8)
