Inflatable boat cover to protect from abrasion?

Post by dlandersson »

I'm currently using a nice little inflatable boat as my working platform around my Mac (change propeller, trim tab, hide from the bill collector, etc.) :P

I'm concerned about random damage from the propellers, etc.

Any suggestions on the best way to add an additional layer of canvas, etc., to protect the skin?

What you are describing sounds like what Sumner and Ruth have done. I'm sure he'll have more to say about it.

How much is this inflatable worth? I'd be spending more money on the accessory than I spend on the inflatable if I bought anything.

Very nice - perhaps not so elaborate. 8)

One suggestion would be to use a common tarp, but another suggestion would be to save your nice inflatable from these dangers by getting an inexpensive inflatable. I am on my second one. I just threw away my 4-person Navigator II 500 after two of the four chambers failed. I got a little over a year's use out of it. I just bought a 3-person Seahawk II on Amazon for just over $100. I suspect that the inflatables, even the less expensive ones are reasonably puncture resistant. My Navigator failed (I think) from being inflated too high and left in the sun on a hot pool deck. Here is a link to the one I just got, if interested.

I agree, I pick up a 3 person (really two) Angler Bay on Clearance for $70.

Putting a small tarp over the side at risk when I'm working around the prop is my current thinking.

If you want to take inflatables to the "next level", so to speak, you can obtain a "sailing kit' and turn them into pretty decent little sailing dinghies. My wife and I like to take our travel trailer on long trips, and I don't like to be without a sailboat, so I take my inflatable along with the sail kit, and "walla" in about 30 minutes, I can have a sailboat!
