I've heard those propane models really do work for the reasons you said. The electronic zappers are cathartic though. Especially if you've been bitten to think you got revenge.

I hate to use the Deet, but it does work. In our neck of the woods, bugs come out at dusk for about 45 mins. We have a cheap net like this one that we throw over the bimini and remove it an hour later.

Or locate yourself near a dockmate with bright lights. He’ll get bugs, you’ll get light.

When on the boat, keep the interior lights dim as possible at night until you can close the openings to bugs with screens or whatever. If some do get inside, then use a technique like Ross suggests. Doesn’t have anything to do with its being fun either, does it Ross?
As Brian said, the best approach is a good defense. Go on the offense outside the boat and you'll be fighting a losing battle! We've been, in days past, camping in some of the worst mosquito districts (Algonquin and Florida come to mind) where just doing a sprint to the can gets you dozens of bites. I like Deet as well because it's saved my life numerous times! But the Admiral has vetoed continued use of that saviour, so now I have to explore my sensitive side with wussy products like skin-so-soft and citronella (useless!). Besides, I'm too old for the Marines.
With childhood memories of my father's words, still ringing in my ears "Get over it boy, it's only a couple of mozzies!" I can sleep through with a few stragglers left in the boat. However, my better half says otherwise - hence the resort to internal directed energy weapons. Nothing like watching a mosquito swollen with your blood, explode with a very satisfying pop when you finally track it down!
The batteries in mine can last for years but the best way to check that is to have a total stranger, whom you're giving your old model to, touch the grid with their pinky! :D

What's More Dangerous: Blood-Sucking Mosquitoes or Deet?
I don't know the answer. With all the nasty diseases out there, I'll take a dose of Deet once in a while and try not to spray it on my burgers. Sure, I can't move my left arm, but at least I don't have West Nile.

Well, if you are lucky it's YOUR blood. What if it's a mixture of yours and someone or some other animal's blood? Eeek!

We used those fan based personal devices last year. Hard to tell if they work or not but they are better than nothing. My concern was that in a breeze they would't work well, but then again, mosquitoes generally don't come out in a breeze.

I swear by the Bug Busters hatch covers - never had one get in while they were one in even the worst spots. But I like Russ's idea for the cheap bug net over the bimini when you don't want to be confined. Continuing with the multi-stage assault, I am liking the electronic swatter for the commandos that make it through the first two line of defense(or when I had to go outside to check something) :)

I also hate DEET but am also concerned about them sharing their "needles" with the wrong person before they top up with me.

I also have the bug buster mosquito netting on the forward and rear hatches, and I can confirm they allowed me to sleep with both hatches open in the Keys. They also restrict the flow of air through the cabin in light breezes, but my small 12 volt fans help me keep my cool. 8)
