Hey Robert! :D

All correct information. And I would be reaching the same conclusion, except one key piece of data has been ignored…
The key piece of information to understanding this fact is the (I’m assuming proper) arrangement of a shackle-type tandem connection, which allows free pivoting from a point between the axels, but it also holds true for tandem torsion bar arrangements.
… that results an inaccurate conclusion.

(And, after all, it was ignoring one single key piece of data that led all science for centuries to the erroneous conclusion that centrifugal force exists). So we are in good company.

Include this piece of data by examining the mechanicals of the pivots at the ends of the shackles and I am confident, particularly given your engineering background, that you will reach the same conclusion as I have.

The mechanical configuration of the connections were engineered specifically (by mechanical engineers, I would expect) to reach that end. You might find some bodged-together trailers that lack this feature, but I am referring to a modern, properly-done installation.

A search online might result in a photo of the pivot bracket that attaches the trailer frame to the axel assembly.

Cheers- Brian.

All my comments regarding tongue loading are based on the addition of an additional torsion axle - I am not aware of 26M aluminium trailer mods with shackle type axles back-fitted (may have happened but at least not the norm). As for as reduced tongue loading - I measured it on my own trailer (just finished the mod).

Now, as far as an additional benefit of the mod, to tie into the subject of additional guides on the trailer for loading in a crosswind:
I mounted an aluminium double axle fender with Taylor dock edge bumper http://www.go2marine.com/product/99509F ... ofile.html. The fender mounts are pretty solid. This setup results in very little clearance between the fenders and the boat - essentially an additional 4 feet to guide the boat onto the trailer
