The last "X".....

Post by Laika 26X »

Does anyone here know who has the honor of owning the last production :macx: ?

Or the honor of owning the first production :macm: for that matter?

Curious as to the HIN's and when the last/first were actually laid down in the molds.

(Slow day at work.)

I recall several years ago when someone (??) mentioned in a thread that the factory made both X's and M's in the 2003 model year, and was quite sure about it.

I'm still wondering if that useless tidbit of history could get seconded or denied by someone else?

Had the same thought about 1995 - have one of those, and there were X's built in 95 I believe also, weren't there?

This isnt Detroit high end manufacturing....a model year is what ever Roger calls it..

The dating convention (Canada and US and ?) is that if it’s manufactured in the first half of the year, it is considered to be that year’s model, and anything manufactured after then can be called the next year’s model.

For example, if your boat’s hull date code is July 2003, then it is considered to be a 2004 model. Skidoo’s and seadoo’s follow this convention as well. Oops. I mean snowmobiles and PWC’s.

I would expect that a manufacturer putting an incorrect manufacturing date on a boat hull would be exposing himself to the risk of fraud litigation, and rightly so. But they do do it with eggs and produce.

I’ve never seen the production facility, but for practical reasons (utilizing left over costly components from the old run; not running the risk of not being able to fill orders; order lead-time; etc etc) it would not be unusual to see both models produced simultaneously during the changeover while the bugs get worked out. And there are bugs, don't we know.

Hello,
Yes, X's were built in 1995. I have one, hull #0064, although technically, they were called 2600 back then. I still have the sales brochure showing that.

Yes, as an "official old-timer" now, I remember some big discussions on this back in 2003 (which happens to be when I got my X boat). The problem is that this discussion may have been on the old board and those threads were never preserved as far as I remember from 8-9 years ago. The bottom line is that I was shopping Macs back in the 2002-2003 period when they were switching over from the 26M to the 26X. The transition was not a hot cut from what I recall, for a while back in that period, the factory was making both of the models at the same time. I'm pretty sure that the last 26X was probably made in early 2003 but its possible it still had a 2002 model year designation too. Mine is a 2000 model so it was not near the end, although there were very few (if any) engineering changes made after 1999 if I recall correctly.

Anyway, for a while, everyone was talking about their hull numbers so we could try to deduce when the last model 26X was and when the first model 26M's were, etc. I'm still waiting for the legendary 30X to get built, but doesn't look like thats happening.. :(

:D :D We visited the factory in 2007 (IIRC). Bill graciously showed me the factory over his lunch hour. One of the things I told him I'd buy in a heartbeat, was a 28-30ft :macx: that had a lot of the features of the :macm: , minus the daggerboard.

Bill shook his head and implied it wasn't gonna happen. We bought our 02 X later that year.

I also purchased my 2000 26X in 2003 from Barry at H&S Yacht Sales in Newport Beach. He told me to go on over to the factory to get a tour. I think I just showed up unannounced and Bill was gracious enough to give me a tour of the factory. I remember seeing the 65 plug on the roof of a building and I think they were making 26Ms at the time. H&S had a new 26M on their lot. I think it was May or June.

In March of 2003, MacGregor introduced the all new MacGregor 26M, to replace the 26X that had been in production for 7 years. Approximately 5000 of the X had been produced before being replaced by the M. I have a 2003 M with this number
MACM0047E303
MACM = manufacturer and design, MACM = 26M
hull = the serial number of the hull, runs continuously for a given design.
E3 = assembly date; A thru L = assembly month; single digit = calendar year.
03 = "model year" begins on July 1 each year and continue thru the following June 30 (except I believe for 2003 for obvious reasons).

Hence mine, MACM0047E303, a MacGregor 26M hull number 0047 built in May 2003 to model year 2003 specs.
