What do I do with this? (Dinette Storage Insert)

Post by vizwhiz »

Okay - inside the cabin under the long port-side bench seat, the long hatch had...this...in it. I'm guessing it was supposed to be a cooler of some kind, or possibly a "dry stash" for things not intended for the bilge area...any confirmation? And then...what do I do with it?

Looks like the PO's custom ice box. Does it hang from the compartment top opening?

It's where you stash all that money you saved by buying a Macgregor.

its for dry storage, under the seat.

factory might have called it a cooler, but its not insulated.

I have a number of large tupperware bins under the seat. keeps everything dry.

nice that you still have yours.

looks like it will fit snug. you could always stuff some plastic shoeboxes or tool boxes behind that bin

We keep all our cooking equipment (pots, pans, cutting boards, etc) in that bin. Keeps them clean and dry.

I can't really make out the scale of it from your picture....but I believe it may actually be this:

Yes it does, and fits nicely, but I don't know if it is custom...I think others have talked about it on this board before. And it takes up most of the room below, of course. I'm just wondering if the space would be better utilized with plastic tubs, or if there are good ways to use this.

:o "Saved" and "Boat" don't go together, from what I understand.
mrbillfll wrote:its for dry storage, under the seat.
So dry storage as opposed to cooler...

It actually has something sandwiched in the core between the inner wall and the outer...looks like slabs of styrofoam...you can kinda see them in the pictures. That's why I was thinking they intended it as a cooler and not just a liner.

This is a great idea, Ken. We'll have to see what "stuff" we're going to be leaving on the boat and see if we can use it. We talked about putting towels and raincoats and such in there, but because it isn't actually fixed, and doesn't have a lid, we didn't think things were any more secure there than they were, say, in the rear berth compartments.

Thanks for all the helpful ideas!

Yes it was MacGregor's idea of an ice box. Pretty lame. Ours did have some foam glued to the sides. We took ours out and put ....

if Sum, ever heels the boat more than 15 degrees those bins could get water in the top... -I know, I know, not going to ever happen ;)

I have bins and tool boxes with a little higher sides so even when heeled over 25degrees its dry...

if it holds what you want keep it, or sell it. but not for a cooler, for dry storage.

Where is the water going to come from? It is dry in that area. Also we have our setup gear in one and the sailing gear in the other main one,

Where it always comes from, the chain plates from rain, or, the ballast leaking.... or something worse.

I try to seal my chain plates every year... and my seal lasts about 1-2 trips... maybe.
(using 4200 and well nuts.)

if it was dry all the time, nobody would need the bins...

In my experience all boats no matter how well sealed from both the water it floats in and the the stuff coming from above....will leak.It seems no matter how much time I spend sealing everything...water still gets in sooner or later.....very annoying.Maybe to do with being bounced on our S##t roads...it seems our slide on camper also suffers the same problem.
