Well, seeing is believing--I haven't seen 18 even under power but the lumps on my head contest his claim for a "full standing headroom"![]()

Seriously though, fabulous wind today in the Tampa area, courtesy of hurricane Irene. We had nice steady wind out of the west at 15-25 all day. I went out on my 26X and with board up on a broad reach, I was occasionally planing. I could see my bow wave come out the back...almost as if my engine was down, but it was tilted up. It would go past the bow wave for a few seconds but couldn't sustain it for too long.

In the right conditions, I do a great deal of planning while under sail.

I take issue with your taking issue...there is plenty of room for a standing head in a mac....

Yeaaaaaa
most people are probably not going to want to do what it would take to get the
M on a plane under sail. Its not going to do it with the stock rig. Runners and other mods def would be needed to fly a big chute in heavy airs. Then get out there in about thirty five. Shell plane if she dont shred first.
Ive planned out Shoal under power even with the ballast in. 18 k. Full plane. Smooth water ten feet aft of the transom.
If a big chute in thirty five is too tame for you then what about a big kite sail hooked to the toweye. Empty the ballast and hang on. I would happily try that. Leave the mast on the dock of course!!!

You could co-star with Charles Bronson in 'Death Wish'.

When I last looked the GPS said 7.2 kn doing wing on wing before a microburst with no ballast, things got very quiet, I swear the boat seemed to lift up, like steering on ice, then she broached. I'm still alive.
Don't try this.

I got my
nose to drop into a plane a couple time with my fins up sail down and 1500+ lbs of living stuff, poor ol motor got hot quick so i had to let off and idle to stop the alarm
