Sailing with the Macgregor Sailors Forum most senior Admiral

Post by c130king »

I was honored to be visited by this Forum's most exalted Admiral (over 11,500 posts)...Sir Stephen Smith (aka "Catigale").

Stephen flew in to DC yesterday morning and caught the Metro to the Pentagon. I gave him the 2-bit tour and after lunch I skipped out of the office early and we drove to my house. Stephen took my wife and I out to dinner...TYVM. And we watched some cool footage on "Shark Week".

But the real excitement was today's sailing. Since Stephen graced me with a visit I took a day of leave so we could hit the water. We decided since we were both early risers we would get out ahead of the DC traffic and we left the house at 5:30. We got to the marina, launched and was motoring away before 8:00. Winds were pretty breezy out of the North and despite a forecast that called for some sun it was pretty overcast and there was some rain in the area but we didn't get wet.

Sailed for about an 90 minutes with full main and genny and frequent hit over 6 knots. Then we did the "heave to" and reefed the main and were still able to maintain over 5 knots.

We stopped for lunch in Galesville, MD at Thursdays Steak and Crab House. Not too busy on a Thursday afternoon. We pulled out of the water around 2:00 since I had to get Stephen back into DC so he could get to his hotel and get cleaned up before his business dinner.

A very good day...I have now sailed with 6 members of this forum on my boat...who's next to come sailing with me on König?

It's great to read about people on this board being able to actually meet up.

I have had the pleasure of meeting five members of the board. Kevin, Stephen, Bertrand (Quebec1), Rick (Bermuda Breeze), and Matt (My Time). I have sailed with Matt and Rick. Next year I hope to meet up with one or more of the UK members. Membership here has been very enlightening, rewarding, and addicting :!: :D

Yeah, that was the best part of attending B.E.E.R 2010/2011. I got to meet many of the people I have been conversing with and following on all the forums for Macs. Lots of fun. If you are teetering on whether to go or not, do it. Go and Have FUN!!!!

Outstanding post. Way to go Jim and Steph. We've had the opportunity of meeting up with several members of this board during our wanderings across the country. We rafted up with Rick Westlake and Uncle Jim on the Chesapeake a couple of years back, and saw Rick again this spring while on our way to Florida. We stayed overnight in Utah on the way home at Sumner and Ruth's place. We're always open to visits out here. It's lots of fun sharing home waters with folks from far away.

I agree that the folks on this board are what makes it such a great place to hang out. And then the chance to meet and, if the stars align, go sailing with is even better.

I have sailed with the following on-board König: Pedro (Sea Wind), Chris (fxwg80hd), John (JCasale), and now Stephen (Catigale).

And while I lived in the UK for three years (with my boat left behind in Florida) I sailed the following on their Macs: Matt on Glissando (Bastonjock) and Rick (RickJ).

I have been out on König sailing along side the following members while they were on their Mac: Phil on Southern Soul (Paj637), Mark & Helen on Alons-y (mark1hf), Dennis & Renea (Inquisitor) and Tony (TFlight).

And though I haven't had the pleasure of sailing with them I have met the following members in person: Jim & Clarissa (Uncle Jim), Rick (Rick Westlake).

And the members that I have EM'd and PM'd with is way to many to list.

I hope I get to meet and go sailing with a whole lot more Mac owners soon. Will meet some new folks at the JMGT 2011 over Labor Day and at the Pirate Fest in NC the first weekend in October.

And now the disclaimer: My apologies if I forgot somebody... :)

Cheers,
Jim

Great thread Jim.

On Tuesday evening I had the chance to expand on the members of this board I have met. The Admiral and I had dinner with Rick & Marge Boucher ( we have been getting together for years at Lake George, NY), but the Admiral and I also met Jim & Mary Roland for the first time.

(Marge, Rick, Jim, Mary, Natalie, & me)

On Wednesday Jim & Mary were out on the lake, and we met up to sail for awhile.

Ray,
It certainly was a most enjoyable evening sharing dinner with you, Natalie, Marg, and Rick at the Ridge Terrace. The best time for me was when you took the helm of BOLD VENTURE and allowed me to observe your sailing skills. Thank-you for the lesson that you didn't know you were giving. The Admiral and I certainly enjoyed the day; as well as our ever alert sea dog, Michaleen. I would include a few pics of your Nice Aft sailing on Lake George, but I have for gotten how to perform this task. Hopefully, you have recieved the pics under separate cover. We have limited access to the internet so if you did not recieve the pics let me know.

Fair winds,
Jim and Mary Rowland

I wonder how many Macs are in the DC area. I know two at my Marina, and one at hope springs.

Jason,

What marina are you at? I was at Fort Belvoir last year. Out on the Chesapeake this year and next spring/summer.

There were 2 or 3 Macs at Ft. Belvoir and I have met at least two others on the Potomac up towards DC.

Cheers,
Jim
