Well I have done it. I am moving up from my hobie cat 18 to a newly purchased 26s.
Just bought it today.
Needs: Cleaned
Running Rigging (Personal Preference)
Gas Tank
Cabin Switches (Preferred)
Sliding Top edges are cracked (Serviceable...lots of cracks in edge where it slides in the Alumn.)
Gasket for Drop in Cabin entry. (Missing)
Roller Furler Headsail (DEESTROYED.)
Possible Spreader Bars (One is askew)
Minor hardware.
Minor Hull repairs (Scratched GelCoat/Glass)
Has:
Ok Bottom. (1/2 life)
CDI RollerFurler (4 our of 5)
Spinnaker (5 out of 5)
Spinnaker Pole
Genoa (5 out of 5)
Mainsail (3 out of 5)
FiddleBock RIGHT in the middle of the Seating area in the rear. (Odd) - BoomVang Downhaul? No clue, yet.
CB
Stereo
Full Cushion Assortment
Snap on Canopy top
5hp motor
I got it for $1800, Had to travel 4hrs to get it. Paid to have it surveyed.
Surveyer has had Macs, loves them.
I will pull out the sails tomorrow (weather permitting)
I plan on getting the Included VHS tape and books out to educate myself more.
any Ideas, suggestions or comments?

Re: New Mac 26s Owner 1990 (Wow)
I too am a new owner of a 1990 26s. I got mine in decent shape from a dealer. Just little fixes to do on her compared to your list. Mine had new bottom paint for instance and was meticulously kept by the previous owner. Have fun getting her up and running. Mine is a blast to sail and pretty quick for a water-hauler. I am finding the more I read about the little quirks these boats have, the more I notice them and address them on mine. Happy reading. Happy sailing. There is a great community here and it is great to share with others who sail the same equipment.
I don't need spreaders, but I have one that is drooping a little. Some new wings would be nice. On my wish list.

You didn't buy that Mac26s for $1800, YOU STOLE IT!!! Congratulations. I have the 26D. If the fiddle block was attached to the seating area near the companionway hatch, then it would be for the main sheet.

WOW! $1800 for a 90' 26S, with a motor, does it float? holly @#$% !!!
That's amazing, post some pic's.
Congrats to you new 26S owners! I have a 91' and love mine, I'm sure you will too. These are a lotta boat for little money, which makes it all that much sweeter
Check the trailersailor.com and macgregorowners.com web sites too, there's more action over there for the older models. I check all three sites just about everyday, to see if there's anything interesting being discussed.

Re: New Mac 26s Owner 1990 (Wow) - ||Dawn Treader||
Well all is better than I thought.
I have an autohelm...just found the control panel to the right of the cabin entryway, arranging to get the additional documentation the former owners stepson forgot to give me.
(he is trying to clear out the garage)
I just took out the Sails.
Mainsail is a solid 4 perhaps even 4.5 out of 5
-Possibly Custom made in Costa Mesa (HP is on the sailmakers tag...its late, I will get that written down)
-two Reefing points
-1 batton missing
-Racing numbers '2535' with M26 on it
-Former owners name on mainsail
There was a nice little bag in the front of the boat, under the forward hatch.
a 5 out of 5 Spinnaker with snuffing tube and under the cushions was a spinnaker pole.
VERY nice.
5 of 5 jib. never used
CDI furler is in very good shape
-Furling Jib is pretty trashed
Mainsail covers look good (black)
BoatName is "Dawn Treader"
Was registered in Nebraska

Re: New Mac 26s Owner 1990
I just took a look at the sails.
These are Harry Pattison Sails.
Main, Jib and Spinnaker.
Furling Jib sailmakers mark is not revealed yet.
Pics will be uploaded on Sat evening...after a horse clinic we are putting on.
Take care...Wayne

Wayne...Sounds like you made a very good deal, especially having it looked over by a Surveyor.InsuredEnough wrote:Hello folks.

In our prev. 26S, we put a fish/depth finder on the Laz Storage floor...well siliconed in (no bubbles). It worked just fine !
We discovered an issue with the swing center board, which required removal and some fiberglass repair. No problem though, it requires a special curved wrench, and the boat on a hoist. Not difficult at all.
A dependable engine is a must.
Enjoy your restorations, and modifications. Hope you enjoy the 26S as much as we enjoyed ours.
Happy Sailing.

Re: New Mac 26s Owner 1990 (Wow)
Ok...the fiddle block is attached to a traveler with traveler Car (I think it is a car!)
Not certain of why.
SAILS:
All Sails are Harry Pattison Sails and in very good condition (except the Furler/Genoa)
I talked to Harry today (newport beach?) I will take out the Furler/Genoa and measure.
We will see what the costs are going to be on that one.
The motor is a 5.5hp mariner with the receipt attached to it for a tune up $200 2 yrs ago. Still hasnt been used since then.
I am very interested in getting the pics taken...but have a deadline to honor.
Sat Afternoon. A promise to myself (unless it is good sailing weather...and I will take out the Hobie18)
Take care.

Wow, do I see a total of three new Mac26 Classic owners here ? I've had mine for a year, now. I stil have to say that this is an awsome craft. No regrets. $1800 for your boat ? What a bargain. You are a very lucky person. Enjoy the restoration and mods ! Post lots of pictures and tell us how you are getting on.

Re: New Mac 26s Owner 1990 (Wow)
Great deal on the boat. Like you, we just moved from cats to mono hull. Been sailing and racing Prindle 18's since teen years. We moved to a 26x (01), but I think you got a better deal than we did. The boat and sails were in excellent shape, but no mods on the boat.. It was stock when we received it, and we had to drive a bit farther (VA to Miami) to pick up
.... Anyway, hope you enjoy the work, upgrades and sailing of your new Mac. I know we have (had it since November).
There is a wealth of knowledge on this site regarding all Macs.
Of and before I forget,, check out http://www.bwyachts.com. MacGregor has this company stock their previous model's parts/accessories, etc. They are a delight to work with. My first encounter with them was replacing hank on jib with furling genoa... They were a big help.
