time to get a helmet

Post by Gater Dunn »

I've banged my head a couple of times on the aft edge of the companion way hatch cover when I've left it half way open, so I usually don't.
what really gets me is the bottem edge of the hatch opening. why couldn't Rodger have them 1/4 round bullnoesed or just a 45 bevel. :x :x
I keep finding little potato chip like bits of skin hanging off it. yummy

Anyone have a cleaner solution than grinding it down and repainting.the dust would get every where.
I've thougth of a nice wood trim to cap it off, or cheaper the foam tubes used to insulate water pipes in your house.

One idea is to consider automotive edge trim...

Wow you must be much taller them me. I have to stand on my tip toes for my head to contact the bottom of that hatch.
Probably the cleanest easiest way is the trim already mentioned but if I had the problem I would go the sawsall way and cut the front off the hatch, make a nice wooden arched piece to bolt on the top of the hatch to restore strengh and make a new companionway slideboard that has a higher curved top.
I suppose being short is saving me time and money lol.

You can buy the same edge trim that goes around your companion hatch entrance sides at most marine stores W/M sells it its avail in white or black . I've also hit my head on it when it was left half way or less open
you could buy front door white vinyle coated foam weather striping thats used for homes its avail on stick on or screw on !! & alot cheaper :)

I sandwiched garage door rubber trim between the hatch edge and 1/2" oak trim (inside). It not only softens the blow but gives a water tight seal between the hatch board and the sliding hatch.

You could just figure out how much to tall you are, then saw a bit off the top of your head,,,,cheaper,,,,,and doesn't leave ugly add on bits on your boat.....

OR

Hang a pouch of scotch from the hatch and every time you hit your head, empty the scotch into your belly - - - you'll be hitting your head on purpose in no time :!:

By habit (I am 6' 1" in my pantyhose) I put a hand on the companionway going up/down....this makes me situationally aware, as C130 pilots say...
