We hook a tensioned bungee to a wheel spoke and to the top lip of the adjacent opening in the cockpit seat riser on our X to hold the wheel fixed while tending to other chores. May instead install an eye low on the pedestal on which to hook the lower end of the bungee. With CB positioned to balance the current sailplan, the bungee holds the wheel fixed. Holds course best with wind ahead of the beam. Ron

Carefull on gusts and proper trim as with proper sails up. I agree in most conditions the bungee's work for temp. work.

Admiral wasn't always available and I ended up with a clutched steering system. When I let go of the wheel it locks in place. to feel weather helm I move the wheel and determine load from resistance.

In spite of the hoots of derision from the bungee cord crowd, this works ridiculously well:

Seems like this would be a good addition even with a "real" autopilot. to aide in a heave to situation, for instsnce.

Heave to is very easy with wheel pilot...just engage the wheel pilot motor but leave controller in standbyl. But bungy's work great for heave to...not so well to hold a heading but it can hold the wheel at full rudder deflection pretty easily.

Cheers,
Jim
