Tire size question

Post by BNG »

I have a 2002 Mac26X on the standard single axle trailer with the orginal tyres 215/75/14 . Has anyone had any issues going with 205/75/15 .

Found this 2006 thread .
"According to this web page, you can swap your stock 215/14 trailer tire/wheel assemblies for 205/R15 and only increase the diameter by 0.2 inches. This will increase your load capacity from 1560 or 1870 to 2120 lb.s per wheel.

Note that the ST205/15 is 27.2 inches in diameter while the ST215/14 is 26.6 to 27.0 inches in diameter. "

Does this info hold true?

Thanks

So I take it you are buying new rims. Might make sure they have the same offset. I can't see a .2 of an inch diameter being significant at all. That is only a .1 (less than an 8th of an inch) difference on the radius which would be what you would be worried about if you wondered if the clearance between the top of the tire and the fender was a problem.

One thing I would do with a trailer that old if it has been in the water much is replace the springs. They are cheap and have probably sagged over 1/8th inch in 8 years. Also at the same time going to a 1/2 inch longer shackle for the back of the spring would more than offset the difference in diameter.

Also don't forget you are increasing the load capacity of the tires and have done nothing about the springs and/or axle. Our axle was already bent on our S trailer and the tires were wearing on the insides pretty bad. I recently added a second axle and along with it disc brakes,

If you want more heavy ratings than stick to the 14 inch rim with more ply on tire to give you a better load. You can get 2500 lbs load per tire if you want or more. The extra plys will add to diamiter but not as much as a 15 inch rim and will be much stronger and resists puntures.
It will cost a bit more but much better tire. :)

I see a lot of folks have moved to a tandem axle and some have even moved up to a 15" wheel and tire keeping the same axle. I'm wondering if anyone has tried replacing the existing axle with a 5200# axle and springs. It would have a 6 lug wheel and the tire would then go up to 29". The fenders would have to be modified at least and my worry is that the tires would be too close to the boat. I'm thinking of this instead of tandem because my trailer is in good shape and I could keep the advantages of a single axle but then have a really reasonable load capacity. The wheel/tire match for this axle would have 2540# per tire making it a great fit for a heavily loaded Mac. I would pull the trigger on this axle if anyone has put 29" tires on an old MacX trailer without issues!

Im not ready for two axles yet. After reading all the treads about the under sizes tires 215/15/14 I wanted to upgrade my old tires. I tthink its funny that I went from Chicago to Maryland on the original tires 2002 without any problems. I guess, call me lucky.

BNG like you my 2002 trailer is in pretty good shape since the PO did not trailer it much but it has been in salt water a few times _had fun getting the tires off as the lugs were pretty rusted and probably never removed. I will check out the brakes, actuator and change out the brake fluid as it looks slightly discolored. The Titan tires are in good shape but I have been having a heck of a time getting the same tire for a spare. Does anyone know where I can get the same tire mounted on the 14 inch rim? Thanks in advance

Eastern trailer parts supply or champion will sell you the tires rims online.....

BNG.....that's great tire life!! They can fail for both miles and age..I got 6 years out of mine before they shredded, so I plan on replacing in after 5 seasons of about 1500miles per season.

12 " wheels was to small of many reasons so i placed a piece of 4 " galvanized channel steel between axle and frame on both sides and used 15 " wheels - i used splitring rims from a 60 year old jeep ....
