26x wiring question
How do you run a new wire from the battery box to the distribution panel? Seems to be imposible.

Re: 26x wiring question
You tie the wire to the tail of a little mouse, then put bits of cheese along...

Re: 26x wiring question
Not impossible, but not necessarily easy. From battery, forward under galley, up under lower cabin liner at chainplate. Up under upper cabin liner between windows to ceiling. Aft to distribution panel.

Re: 26x wiring question
I have used two rare earth magnets.
Use electric tape (or equivalent) to tape heavy thread to one magnet then tape string to the end of 10-15 ft of thread.
Using this method I have been able to run electric wire through incredible places relatively quickly.
Make sure you use small but powerful magnets.

Re: 26x wiring question
thin welding rods and bicycle gear change wire has not let me down yet. Put a little kink in the poking end so that if it sticks, pull back, twist a bit and try again.
pain innit!

Re: 26x wiring question
I used a coat hanger. Tape the electrical wire to the top of the hanger and work from bottom of the boat up vice from the panel down. If you need to run multiple wires, tape a string on the hanger as well and then pull the wires back once you have reached the panel. I ran a couple of spare wires for possible future use so I only had to go through the PITA once.

Re: 26x wiring question
Dont forget to leave a pull string for next time!
You can use a washer with a string and a magnet to move it as well.. a few guys have been lucky using fishing poles as I recall. IIRC they used an OLD pole with all but the tip .... guide removed.

Re: 26x wiring question
I heard some folks use the washer on a string with a strong magnet on the other side of the hull.
It takes a lot of creativity to find the easiest path.

I just bought a mouse. I hope he understands directions. I will give it a go and let you know what happens. Great ideas from everyone.

Re: 26x wiring question
You can always sacrifice the original wire in place, and use it to pull 2 wires by taping off or tying.

Brian,
Add a new panel to the left side of galley and run all your wires from that point, you can still keep the main elect. board open if you want.

That's what I did when I rewired the whole boat, but just moved the original panel. However, I still had a fun time fishing the new transom light wire to the relocated panel. Note- on my boat, the original wiring was sandwiched between the chainplate and the hull, adding to the difficult of tracing the old wires by tugging on them.
Re: 26x wiring question
In Australia electricians, antenna installers, computer cabling guys use the tongue from particle board flooring...its a hard flat plastic material 5/8" wide and about 3/16" thick...reasonably rigid, drill a hole in one end ,attach said wire and start poking it in the general direction required.I found after a while you get quite good at aiming.I've now rewired and added wire to all corners of our 26X with out too much trouble.Mind you the removal & replacement of floatation is time comsuming. One thing....does the US use particleboard flooring.....maybe a different name
