This is just one of the reasons that I am glad that my :macx: has a large motor. I have never been out in that kind of storm and hope that I never am.

I just got time to look around and find that clip, but with some info ..

Possibly the original post of the clip.. http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread. ... 28video%29
I personally feel this is one of the better comments.....

UNBELIEVABLE!!!! (video)
It could have gone SO wrong in SO many ways SO fast... yet he must have at least entered the harbor before if only in lesser conditions. I would not have been able to hold the camera on it if I'd seen that. I also wonder if he could see how confused the waves in the entrance were as he approached from to windward.

"You stand on the bow and fend off if we need it." YA RIGHT!!

**and some guy did just that hahahahaha as you al saw.
Hey where's Highlander and Beene They can do this ... I'll take the Video!

Except for the stupidity of attempting it that was as good a job of piloting as you could ever expect to see .

I read a lot of the comments on The Wooden Boat Board.... The ones I agree with most said basically..... Watch the Video a few times .. Then watch it closely.
#1. They did have a spotter on bow for what ever reason
#2 Once in... that harbor was calm
#3. No jumping and slapping backs and high 5-ing they may well have done things like this, in the past
#4. Its an island off Denmark in the North Sea they're no doubt good sailors

.

We are turning to be like some other sites, as soon as we do not agree with something we use the words....bad words. All I can say is: my hat is down for the skipper and his crew. That was as good as it can be in these conditions. And surely we do not want to have entrance like this but we may have to one day, and if it happen I would like to be calm and precise as this skipper with a trusty bow man to show me the way. No doubt, superb seamanship. I will crew on this boat at any time, and I would shut up and learn.

If you watch that video several times you'll see how they came in to the harbour entrance high on the Starboard side because the waves would have taken them out if they had entered center or to port , they timed the waves perfectly to make the entrance high on the S/B side & then put the pedal to the metal as they say to power into the hole - shot perfectly & make their entrance looks like they done this before with lost of practise if not then my hats off to this skipper as he knows his stuff or just maybe was lucky but either way he's got Brass B'S just for making it happen , I did something simular with a 14 ft runabout with a 18HP eng yrs ago but it took me about 7-9 try;s before I figured out the wave patterns to time it just right, made it eventualy but I was beginning to think I was toast & met my day !! :o

PS now thats seaman ship you got to tip your hat off to these guy's :)

I think i disagree with that analysis that they accelerated through the hole. You don't have enough HP on a boat like that to perform that maneuver. The surge forward was actually coming off the swell coming through the entrance.

That was pure and unbridled seamanship. The skipper knew where everything was (look know close he came to the pier on his starboard side....2-3 feet at most ?? :| :| :|

That being said, an engine hiccup, an unusual wave, strong gust of wind/shift and you are TOAST!

I agree but if you watch closely you'll see the boat surge out of the bottom of the swell & with the weight of the boat coming down through the swell you do not need a lot of HP to get that little extra boost !
If you practise these kind of moves enough ! you can become very good at performing them , then it becomes like riding a bike what you have to watch out for is that you can become quite complacent and thats when you can get into trouble ! :o
You can practise these moves in open rough sea's to get the feel of how your boat will handle in these conditions and thats not a bad idea because you never know when you might need these skills

That's Seamanship....

But dollars to donuts, if the skivvies weren't brown, it's due to a major superhuman pucker factor.

Then I am screwed glued and tattooed.. Give 15 to 20 mph wind with as little wave action as possible. Heeled over a Daring 20 degree's :) Clear skies warm weather porpoises off the bow..I am just too old for that stuff.. BUT... I love watching The Mad Men Of Ontario Video's !!!

It looks to me like the skipper "surfed" his way through the gap on the crest of a following wave.

The only way I'd ride along with these fellows in this kind of weather is if they gave me a large set of diapers.
