Another Lesson learned ......... "rafting up"
This weekend I met up with a buddy of mine on the Delaware river he was anchored and I pulled up next to him and we tied cleat to cleat with fenders out. All was fine we talked for a few minutes ... he went below to get something and I heard "BANG,BANG,BANG,BANG.." about 5 times.....looked at the obvious (hull to hull) and all was fine ....fenders were placed properly.... Looked up and our mast were banging hard on each other ... A boat came by with a large wake!!!!
We quickly untied and pushed off. In the 30 seconds or so we determined damage was only to his Windex which I will be going aloft next weekend in a Bosuns chair to replace.... It could have been a lot worse....Will never "raft up" with another sailboat again in a busy waterway....
Sidenote:
The other boat is a 27' ODAY with a keel ...Is there any issues with a 200lb guy going up in a Bosuns chair on this size boat? He only has one halyard for the mainsail and possibly a topping lift . I have seen this procedure done before and feel compitant that I can get up there to replace the windex and would not mind getting the expierience. I am just looking for advice on anything I should know before heading up.

Anytime sailboats raft you always have to make sure the masts are not lined up with each other. Just stagger them by 2'-3' and you should be fine.

For two of the 'same boat' you can raft bow-to-stern too, to keep the rigging clear. Perfect arrangement for a rafted 'Bahama' mooring too...

Also perfect for giving both boats a little privacy! Best of both really, close for friends and groups but also a little space to relax when needed.

This was not as much fun as I thought it would be....I need to make one more trip up...If I had to do it again I may let a younger smaller person make the trip....

Good Lord..
Wouldn't it have been just as quick to lower the mast?

Eight New Zealand owned Macs rafted up at Easter with no tangles surprisingly!

Matt,
The difference between a wise man and a smart man is that a smart man knows how to get out of a situation which a wise man would not have gotten into in the first place.
as previously note, lower the mast. Think brother, think
Ray
P.S. Does anyone have a photo they can post of a bow to stern rafting hookup? I can't seem to conceptualize this.

Unfortunatly this was not a Mac and he thought it may be too involved to lower the mast...I have only done that on my Mac and a 19' daysailor so I took his word for it....

Not the best picture of bow/stern to rafting, but an edit of a previous picture that I have posted...

I think that you can get the gist from this?

four rafted up in the English channel for an overnighter.

Pefectly comfortable. 2 anchors out front and another couple to the beach. Was nice to not be swinging around all over the place!

In the Navy when we moored bow to stern with one ship outboard the other it was called "Chinese Moored". I guess you could call it a Chinese Anchoring just as easy
