We had two cocker spaniels, one black: Dakota & one chocolate: Abby. Last May, Dakota passed away at 12 years. At 6 years old, Dakota had a disk problem that paralyzed her back legs. After rehabbing her for several months, she slowly regained limited use of her legs, which resulted in a perculiar walk, limited climbing, and no jumping up. This however did not exclude her from any activity. Both dogs enjoy(ed) camping, hiking, biking, kayaking, sailing,... I could go on & on. They both really took to sailing on the Mac, tho I think in part, they just want to do what I'm doing. At nearly 13, Abby is totally deaf now & still runs to the boat despite it being covered up & snowbound.

Hi JACKIE M thanks for the information. perhaps we'll put our pup, BUTTONS, in her small cage overnight; won't pee in there, and the same if we are doing a long, 6+hr trip on the water. Buttons loves to travel, so I imagine it will be the same sailing. When we fly, our dogs/dog sleep until it's wheels down. Alice and Stew, "THE RESTLESS TWO"

New K9 crew!
The last of the original K9Kampers (Abby), passed away this last April. After that, I thought it would be a while before her and her sister's crew spots would be filled. However... last night we brought home our two new sailing companions. Two black cocker spaniel sisters from the same litter. Named, get this... Jib & Genny (Genoa)! It'll be a bit before they grow into the doggie PFDs, but I've already got them sniffing around the kayak and Mac cockpit.

old post
Our 10 year old twin girls have a 16 year old cat and two 6 month old kittens - would love to get them a canine companion but havent a clue how to work one into my travel schedule.
>> we broke down that summer and rescued two dogs = our 17 year old cat passed away in March 2009, but the two kitties are now monsterous black predators who routinely stalk the dogs and terrify them...!!!
Ellie is a sleek Shepard Greyhound? mix
Maddie is a Lab, Shep, Huskie mix.

They just give beautiful brown eyed love unconditionally, always and amazingly joyous and happy to see us -- but -- (THERE's THAT OTHER PROBLEM): ...the short-lived life, and eventual sad-day occurs. When we buried our Golden Retriever "FRIEND", it was a family sad event. We continue to maintain the grave site on our farm, holding onto those "fun" memories. She was an awesome pet, and the amazing thing, she was found years ago as a pup trotting along side our rural road as an apparent "Throw-away"...
We now have "YIPPIE", a choc. Chiahuahua, given to us by the children following the loss of "FRIEND". And, now we love YIPPIE as much...even tho he seems to have less "smarts" than FRIEND. No problem...he's family now, and well travelled. All I have to say is: "YIP"...get your toy...and he grabs his 4" toy rope, tail waggin', and he's ready to jump into the car and goooooooo--and he dont care about destination...lets just GO.
Dont get me started talking about PETS 'n critters...
Then...there's the "stray" "wild" (tamed) cat, along with about 20 raccoons, wild ducks, white-winged doves, squirrels, etc., all seemingly hanging around knowing they've found a friendly farm folk. Real fun stuff.
Concerning the raccoons, yes I know the dangers of rabies...and we're watchful.

Re: seagoing dogs
My daughter's Boxer "Ace". We were worried if he would even come aboard as he doesn't care for unsteady footing. Ace jumped right aboard. One day, with a totally blank horizon, Ace sat and stared at the horizon for 10 minutes or so, as if he saw something.... maybe just a natural appreciation for natures vastness? He is a pleasure to have aboard in spite of his 70lbs. Only pottied aboard once, danced and whined for a while, finally squatted and did #1 on the cockpit floor. A bucket of water later and it was all but forgotten. I received a Sail magazine and it had a dogs aboard article, in they said to get a natural fiber door mat, try to get some of his urine on it and he'll use it repeatedly. Ironically, the dog pictured was a spittin' image of Ace (so I assume it must work

Kanouk my bunk mate comes from the Québec SPAC. He is part American Eskimo and Pomeranian. This spring we trailered the boat to Florida without him.....never again!Québec 1 wrote:Dog nap in the aft berth of Le Zephyr!
