2010 Red Bull Air Race - Windsor / Detroit

Post by Starscream »

Does anyone have any info/experience about watching the Windsor Red Bull Air Race from the water? Where would one launch into the Detroit River, and is there a Marina or any place to overnight within reach of the show?

The race is on June 4 & 5 2010 and sounds like an interesting weekend.

Check out the Lake Erie Metro Park in Gibrala. It's at the mouth of the Detroit River just south of Detroit. I used this last year for a trip to Lake Erie and North Bass Island. Nice public marina w lots of parking, and a good staging area. Stay the night there and you can store your vehicle and trailer free. They even have coffie and donuts on weekends for donation. Good clean marina w clean restrooms/ showers. You must buy a parks pass ($20.00 US.) though :P :P . For phone number and address check out the Michigan DNR web site

I doubt that a Macgregor with a 50 Hp motor would have any problem with the Detroit River Current. When I had my Mac 26D with only a 10 hp motor I attempted to enter the Detroit River, only to find myself going nowhere and the frieghter traffic scared me off.

I was planning on visiting the Area this summer with my 26X 50Hp. Send us a report.

Good Luck

I live on Lake Erie, work in Windsor and have a slip on Lake St. Clair for my 26M.

You will not have a problem getting a launch site, marina or overnight anchorage.

Contact me and I will provide a list of Marinas, anchorages and launches on the Canadian side. If you plan an extended stay I will provide you with additional information about sailing destinations in the western basin of Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair.

If you want to go to the U.S. side there are numerous marinas along the entire coast line of Lake St. Clair.

Glad to help and be of assistance.

Yes, yes. You should make the effort. Went to the red bull in San Diego with my 26M. Took most of the folks who race with me, slept seven in the boat. The plan was for two sleeping in cockpit, wet dew like a fire hose sent the two wet ones in on top of the rest. Several needed to potty in night, one was sea-sick ( at anchor ), one wanted to go home. It was still wonderful. Oh yeah, one met up with her boyfried and we actually went to air races with eight. Wonderfull to have those high powered planes at full power just overhead, the noise. Red Bull! Don't miss it.
