Engine Flush Bag for boats in water
Engine Flush Bag for boats in water
I just bought a motor flush bag from Quality Marine Products. They have a new model, MB-1 that works on up to 80HP and It Is made for outboards that must be lowered into saltwater and the boat is left in the slip. $89.

Very simple and clever. It would have worked so much better than my plastic garbage can.

Re: Engine Flush Bag for boats in water
My 2006 60 HP ETEC, of course, had a built in connection for a hose (I added a quick connect) with with to flush the engine easily - - and when I learned to back my Mac into it's slip it became even easier.
Now - - - very confusing - - - - both the manual and the factory said it was unnecessary to EVER flush the engine (????????), even in salt water (?????????) - - - then why the built in hose connection??????

Re: Engine Flush Bag for boats in water
When I had my boat in a slip in Norfolk, VA for 8 weeks back in 2007 I could access the motor when backed in. Just slipped the muffs over the water inlet and turn on the hose. With the motor tilted up and running it would "pee" an ipressive 8' arc right onto the pier...quite a site.
No prostrate issues with my motor yet...

Like Barnum Bailey said there is a sucker born every minute.
Re: Engine Flush Bag for boats in water
I used the new flush bag yesterdsay and saw a lot of grime come out of the engine. I was using the ear muffs for the last 10 years. I used alot of Salt Away with the bag.
The instructions say that with using the flush bag there is no back pressure as with the ear muffs and operates with the correct amount of water designed for the water pump. The ear muffs are spitting out half the water at the cups as no one knows how much water pressure to turn on and usually turn it too high.
Now that I see it and have the specs I think I could have had it made for $50-$65. Get the material from a fabric store and take it to a sail or canvas store with the picture. You don't need the water intake for the hose, just use a hose going into the bag it self and watch water level.

Re: Engine Flush Bag for boats in water
Please let us know how long you can flush with this bag before the temperature of the water in the bag rises too high to be useful for cooling the engine and overheating occurs. I know you probably you keep the water hose running the whole time to keep the water cool. But the reason I ask is that my ramp has no water hose and there is no hose available to me in the storage lot where I keep the boat. I only have a car wash on the way to the lot and there is no hose to use there either. What I have done so far is put 5 gallons of water thru the engine while on the trailer by way of ear muffs and a water jug and a small water pump. I tried the quick connect flushing water point and got intermittent tell-tale water so I got afraid of that method and went to muffs, with the waste of water overflow as mentioned above. I just feel that any water thru the engine is better than none. How many gallons needed to fill bag to correct point?

Re: Engine Flush Bag for boats in water
This is not a new idea...but its a good one...I posted this mod about two years ago...had the bag made up at a canvas shop...and cart about 15 litres out to the swing mooring each time...of course, no access to a tap/faucet, but the motor only needs 5 minutes or so running to flush it...not enough time for it to overheat....when done, just empty the bag into the drink and pack it away...The bag does not even have to be totally waterproof...it just has to hold the clan water for as long as it takes to flush the motor...Saves landing on a dock with a water supply...

Re: Engine Flush Bag for boats in water
I saw a Bar-B-Q cover at Home depot that I think would work. It was for a tall round Bar-B-Q. Also maybe an army canvas duffel bag might work. I have also seen large sail bags that would work.
I used the flush bag twice so far and it really needs a pole to attach it from the boat. While the engine is in the up position use the pole inside the bag to guide it onto the engine. This also keeps the lines from falling all over the place. I used my push-off boat pole that has a hook on the end.
