Lake Ontario sailing destinations??

Post by shawndutchcanadian »

Hello.
I am a proud new owner of a Macgregor Venture 25....... Just dying to get out on the water (as soon as the weather warms up a bit).
Looking for any advice on where to sail for the best conditions and/or attractions. if not on Lake Ontario, any trailerable distance from the GTA.
I have heard good things about "1000 islands", Niagra-on-the-Lake, and "Wiarton"??
Any suggestions?? I can launch and sail out of Newcastle (Lake Ontario) or Keswick (Lake Simcoe) or........?
Cheers!

Hi Shawn, what is your sailing experience to this point? That might help some of the guys give you suggestions suited to your abilities.

We needed to start on a smaller body of water as we were totally new to sailing at this point last year. We still aren't up to really big water,

My Sailing experience up to this point has been sailing my 12' Dingy on "Cooks Bay" off Lake Simcoe, and misc. beach type sailing around Lake Ontario.
At this point, I will be a "Fair weather" sailor for the most part. Staying close to shore most of the time, and trailering the boat if any distance is involved.
I guess I am looking for interesting locations that are:
-sailboat friendly/accessible
-that tend to have fair sailing conditions
-consistently steady winds
-light-ish surf
-sheltered coves etc.

Shawn,

Check out the boat ramp in Port Credit right next to PCYC, good facility and your only a couple of hours sail from the Toronto islands, a great place to spend the weekend or even tie up down town and walk to dinner. There are a number of anchorages or you can tie up to the wall at Hanlan's point or stay at the Island marina. That is also a great place to see the fireworks from. It's been a few years since I sailed those waters but had some great times there. There are so many good destinations on lake Ontario, almost any direction you head you will find good places within a few hours sail.
The Thousand Islands are not to be missed and probably one of the worlds best cruising grounds, make sure you have enough time to see it all as there is lots to see and towns to explore. The park islands are the best.

Fair Winds,
Mark

Hi Shawn
The wife and I are taking two trips this summer, the first summer with our 26x. The first will be trailering it to Tobermory Ontario for a week and the second from Toronto to Sandbanks Provincial Park and on to Kingston for two weeks.
We went camping in Tobermory last year, what a beautiful place. Google Earth shows numerous little coves and bays around Manitolin Island for protected anchorages.
Our boat will be at a marina on the Holland River for the summer so we also plan to take weekend trips for some nightlife in Barrie and possibly Orillia.

Happy sailing

Mike

Shawn - cross the pond to Wilson NY for a nice place. EM me and I can connect you to the Tuscorora YC there.

Hi there

My M in docked in the Barrie City Marina.
My playground is primarily Kempenfelt Bay and Lake Simcoe.

I have been all over much of Ontario and its many lakes.

We are truly blessed to have such a diverse area for boating of all kinds.

I have become lazy, and like just leaving my Mac in the water from May to Oct, so I tend not to venture too far from home anymore.

Lake Ontario, can be beautiful, and dangerous, all in the same day. With your experience level as stated, be careful how far out you go if trying that lake out.
Same story for Simcoe, or any of the greats around these parts.

Some of the best places were mentioned by others already.

I toured the Trent/Severn Waterway from Simcoe to Georgian Bay and highly recommend that trip also.

Try this area for sure http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beausoleil_Island

Cheers
