Put it in your mom's name and register it in CO. They can't track you then because it's not yours.
I would find any way to beat that extortion tax.

I did - - - I moved to Mexico and then Nevada (not just because of them) - - - what are they going to do now - - - file a tax lien against me in California? Good luck collecting! If it ever appeared on my credit report I would call it a dispute. They will certainly never collect it from me.
Now they tell me I didn't properly NOTIFY CALIFORNIA when I sold the boat Are they serious I didn't live in California when I sold it I've got news for them; I didn't notify Maryland either, even though I lived there once

PS I proudly display on my office bulletin board an original uncashed check for the FINAL ACCOUNT REFUND from Verizon California, dated 3/1/05 for the sum of $00.01
I worked 18 hours driving the cab before I responded to ifrastar's post yesterday and was so tired I forgot one extra piece of information Greedo from the assessor's office gave me : I asked him: What if someone owns one of these boats and does not own a house? His response infuriated me- The boat owner would only pay 1% of the assessed value annually as opposed to 1.125% plus bond measures if he owned a house. Attaboy ! Stick it to them homeowners !
Let me tell you how it will be;
There's one for you, nineteen for me.

Doug91,
What I understand, at least in my case, is my boat is located in LA County, so it gets a personal property tax levied.
I assume the Taxman took a stroll through the mast up storage lot (LA County run) and noted CF registration numbers.
A DMV check gave him the track-me-down info.
They get a value from somewhere, (BUC?) and because it was low IMHO, I didn't want to stir the pot and end up with a re-calculated bill.
My first year tax (2006) was $180 something, and it has been decreasing each year since, along with the stated value.
The tax letter I receive each year includes a statement to the effect of "This boat was located in LA County on Dec 31, 20XX, therefore, pay up you sucker".
Hence my simple thought of trailering it home during that time, with proof that it was NOT in LA County on "Dec 31" and wondering if their words actually mean what they say.
Doug91mac26s wrote:Damn! How long have they been taxing like this anyway?
So let me see if I got this straight. They tax my proberty where my house sits, then they tax one of my possessions that sits on my property? What are they gonna do next, tax all my possessions?
YES, they already got ya for Sales Tax. BTW.. don't worry they''ll only go up over time, they always do.
In PA, don't know about other states/commonwealths, when you get Unemployment Compensation you have to pay Federal Income Tax on the $$ benefits you receive from the State. Even though you already paid that Federal Income Tax on the gross income $$ you received when you got your paycheck, so after the Feds got their Tax $ there, then the State hits you for Unemployment Compensation Tax. Then when you file for UC benefits from the state and start receiving your earned UC benefits the FED's hit you again for Federal Income Tax $$$ that you have ALREADY paid Fed Tax on when you got your paycheck. Isn't life GRAND !!! Confusing, NO ! Unconstitutional, YES !!! Oh, but they have an Amendment for that too. Bottom line: PAY YOUR TAXES, or they'll put a lien on your Boat, Home, etc. You're also paying for a WATER/Sewer Bill, so they're probably working on a Wind Bill, Sun Bill and anything else they can muster up and they'll Tax that too.
Yes, they tax boats in San Diego County. As it was explained to me, any boat with a value of over $5,000.00 is assessed. I trailered exclusively! I paid it every year till I left The Sad State of Affairs previously known as California, for Pennslvania two years ago. Funny, but I actually recieved another notice today. I was going to just send it back in, with LOL written on it, but instead called. I got a nice gentleman who didn't have a clue on what to do. I said they need to tax the criminals coming in from Mexico with all the Illegals....Oh, they abandon them on the beach, I forgot!
So, one thing I did was tell them I don't need no stinkin' motor as I was a sailboater. The value was $10,000 from one year old (When I purchased it) after I was done! I deducted 5 thousand for that wonderful Mac trailer off the value as well! I refused to pay more for the size of my motor, I rowed the damn thing for all they knew, so Never reported a damn motor!
Anyway, after much confusion on his part, and hearing him ask other overpaid clueless people on what to do, he gave me a name to call, and he said up front that the person wouldn't be there, but I could leave a message. So I called, left him an earful, said they could save some of that money they don't have by Not sending me any more bills. I circular filed it, and will do the same every year they want to waste money asking me for more that they will not get! Or maybe send a pic of my full moon and tell them to kiss it!
I guess I cannot complain too much of how taxes are pervasive, confusing, and downright a ripoff in CA. Here in PA, charges..... to get a sticker every year for my Non-motorized vessels! CA did not, but I am sure once they find out that other states are, lookout! I have 4 Kayaks they scam money out of me for! And I don't even have an Ocean anymore within my State Borders!
Aha - the infamous 'kayak' tax - we put that one on to keep people from keeping kayaks on sawhorses in the backyards for free - now we can buy them used for a song and a dance...
In NY, you only have to have a sticker if it has a motor on it - so the Hobie and Harpoon are stickerless

but your property tax continues to go up every year, even in a down market.
and your income tax rates are one of the highest in the country.
they gotta get their money from somewhere...

Sunny and warm here also. Went sailing two weeks ago. My property taxes are only 3X what some of you are paying on your boats. Income taxes don't matter to the currently unemployed (me). I'm so depressed I think I'll take the boat out again next weekend.
That's why I bought two identical large POS old houses boats for the low tax rates. I gutted them, one is totally refurbished the other is storage/workshop. The upper decks have power winch lower-able patio roofs to get under bridges. The roofs are all covered with solar panels. When I'm tired of the view, I tow one with the other (both) are power-able (gasoline), but I'm able to travel at least 5 miles a day with electric thrusters without loosing too much juice to keep other things running . I make my own water too. My bit of paradise
