Well I never.. I feel shamefully embarrassed.. what an ignoranus not knowing that! I didn't get a toolkit or manual with our boat, though I know about the placky cover. I'll get that off tomrow sharpish.
Thanks for the info on tilt overide. I have noticed it. That's brilliant.
As for scans of the manual that would be great. is ti big? perhaps an exploded view of the pump, tilt cyl (I wanna look inside that as I never have before) and some info on the electrical output is really all the info I need, oh yes, and maybe a lower leg assy as I want to change the impeller too. Scanning tomes is rather a pita so I'll save that for something really important 8)
Is the pp telltale strong on these? Mine is a bit weak, but I don't know what it should be.
Thanks again for all the help. Really puts a smile on my face as I go out into the snow armed to the teeth with tools n teak as the galley is starting to take shape at last...

The entire manual pdf document for that motor is about 48.1 Mb :)

and the "weak pp" is pretty much normal

Jim, those are *owner's* manuals, not shop manuals. Admittedly, they are helpful, but won't help you if you have to tear one down.

Sorry for the confusion - I was misled by restless's statement "I didn't get a toolkit or manual with our boat" and the discussion of the manual starting. I would guess Don was offering to scan the owner's manual - if not, than I'd like a copy of the shop manual also.

Hello,
I have the service manual for my 1995 Tohatsu M50D (50 pages) that I was offering to scan.

Don

It is however, written as a reference for someone who already knows how to work on outboards. It has technical info but lacks detailed "how to" for the inexperienced.

This is going to sound like a dumb suggestion, but before you tear your engine down...check to make sure the vents are FULLY open on your gas tanks. A partially open vent can cause exactly the kind of intermittent engine failure you described. Everything is fine until the fuel outflow exceeds the air inflow. Then a partial vacuum results and no more fuel flows. The pressure will equalize after a while and everything will work just fine again-until the next time. Nothing will be found wrong with the outboard when you tear it down (or pay a lot of money to have it checked), but the problem will still occur. This happens more often than you would think, drives people crazy, and causes motors (and boats) to be sold for cheap.

I think this occurs because people (meaning me) close the vents to prevent condensation in the tank, but don't remember to open them fully when underway. A check for this is to wait until the problem occurs and then check the vent, If the tank hisses (pressure equalizing) when you open the vent-problem solved. Of course, you could just make sure the vent is fully open in the beginning, but then you wouldn't know if you'd solved the problem for sure. Hope this helps.

Good luck,

Bill

Damn good point Bill.
I know mine are open, but are they fully open??? :?

Now I've just caught some threads re manuals and tear apart guides.. it seems the manual is online as jim pointed out, but they are pretty limited. I'm not feint hearted when it comes to stripping anything so if there is some proper documentation relating to torque settings and gearbox shimming then I'm well up for it. I do want to check the alarm senders, change the impeller and strip the fuel pump some time next week, striking a few more off my list of 83 to-does :|
