Real weight of Mac 26M

Post by darekluczak »

My 2006 Mac 26M "Elanka" is safely stored in an old style post and beam barn in my backyard.
I need to pull out trailer from under it for service. I wanted to use structural beams of my barn to suspend it while servicing the trailer. I have couple of different styles of pulleys one 1 ton I've found @ Home Depot and 3 ton chain pulley. Do you have any ideas how to do it safely to the building and boat as well? What is real weight of "Elanka" with Honda 50 attached to it, some gear, and stuff below deck?

According to the MacGregor specs, the Boat weight empty is 2550 lbs. Adding motor and gear my guess would put it at least 3000 lbs. Not sure how your barn is built but I would bet it could hold the weight. If in doubt, put some cribbing under the boat after removing the trailer. Is there any snow on the roof? If so, maybe wait till it melts.

I would advise you to proceed with caution. I am a structural engineer and even a Mac can break structural members if the loads are applied wrong. Watch your load path. Make sure you have redundant load paths. If the beam starts to give, where else can you distribute the load? Consider multiple load paths when you rig a hoisting mechanism. Try to distribute the load to as many members as possible. Remember the load will travel through the hoist beam(s) to the walls (or girder beams or columns) and eventually to the foundations. Everything needs to work together. If you need to move the boat horizontally as well as vertically, remember this will cause a lateral load to the support system. Be VERY careful if your barn has sloped wood roof rafters that do not have bottom chords to keep the top of the support walls from splitting due to an increased vertical load on the rafters.

Sorry if I am preaching hellfire and brimstone, just want you to know how careful you need to be and what some of the issues are. I'm sure that with some enginuity you'll be able to do it safely, good luck!

Here's a LINK to a previous discussion on removing the trailer from underneath the boat using blocks and / or jackstands. A time saver on my process would be to block the stern and lift the bow from overhead to remove the trailer, then block the bow for service work. However done - BE CAREFUL & think the steps thru.

If you decide that the barn structure is suitable for your task, some thoughts on the boat:
Removing unnecessary weight from the boat - water & fuel & heavy items will aid in reducing the load on boat / lift / structure. Where to attach a lifting point? (block the stern and lift the bow). I would not attach to the cleats as I don't know if they could handle that kind of load. Instead, using a lifting strap to cradle the hull (as boatyards do) would be ideal. A lifting sling can be made by using a suitable strong rope, passing it back and forth under the hull to distribute the load. Secure a safety line from the lifting sling horizontally to a point on the boat to prevent the boat from sliding out of the sling. You only need to lift the boat an inch or two to clear the trailer, then block the lifted end for safety.

Thanks for your input.
I've got 20' slings that should handle up to 12600 lbs in U configuration each.
I have couple different puley options which should be enough to handle the boat.
Barn has 4 of cross beams on each side of boat spaced out about 13' apart. First set is around 8' from floor a second 16'. I'm planing to use uppers to try to keep loads as vertical as possible.
My plan is to lift up a stern 4-6 inches and constuct some kind of support it, then lift up a bow and repeat the procedure.

I had my MacM weighed at the local Weighbridge to register the trailer and she came in within 20 lb of the book figure. go figure.
