Replacement Fuel Tanks
I have the standard 8 gal fuel tanks on my 2002 26X. I don't like fighting with them to get them in and out under the seats (especially when they are full). I would like to switch to 6 galllon tanks that have a handle on the end and slide in side to side vice fore and aft, this way I could mount two six gallon tanks on each side. I remember seeing a thread that listed which tanks fit, but of course now I cannot find it. I appreciate any information someone might have.
Thanks again

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks
The 6-gallon Neptune tanks are still available ... I saw them in K-Mart last summer. The post that Ken pointed out, showed that two of them would fit side-by-side in the lazarette spaces of the 26X. I may go ahead and get at least three of them, this winter ... "one for out, one for back and one for emergencies," as my scuba-diving Rule Of Thirds would put it.

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks
They may be hard to find as Tempo is out of business, but I have been very happy with my four Value 6 tanks. On an X which does not have the lifting seat like a M, you get easy access to the filler opening and the fuel line connection without having to release the hold down strap and pull the tank out. It did take some light enlarging of the opening to get them in, about 1/2" of the aft edge of the face had to be removed and I also lowed the bottom lip so it was as flush as possible. I also like that the handles are on the top instead of the end so nothing leaks when you carry them.

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks
Found a 6-gallon fuel tank that fits 2 into locker without cutting or trimming any of the fiberglass edges around the locker. No cutting at all, and the edges provide a fair amount of retention.
"Neptune" brand 6-gallon gas tanks with vent-caps, made in Canada, and sold at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World for about 14 dollars USD.
Seems to intrude less into the cockpit, and the fuel line is easily accessible at the front of the tanks, but does not have the "pipe" at the front like the Tempo 6 gallon tanks.
The Neptune tanks have an overall more square shape that fits the locker better. The handles are the only thing that really project out. I use two on the starboard side, where there is seldom any access traffic, and just one on the portside to allow room for two 1-gallon oil bottles, and some extrs dock lines.
The long fuel tank straps were bought from West Marine, and the typical plastic hold-down pieces are now all mounted hidden inside the lockers like those in the port-side picture, to reduce ankle-biting and provide better retention.

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks
ALX357, I really like your tank mod, thanks for the sourcing information. I have looked at those tanks and wondered if they would fit the locker space, well now I know. I think I just found another item to add to the Christmas list.
BTW, what's that you have on the cockpit floor? How is it on bare feet?

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks
ALX357,
Can you clarify how you have your tanks plumbed to the motor? Do you have one fuel line connected to the motor that you can pop on/off each tank as necessary? Looks like you have more than one fuel line in your pic.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks
Howdy,
Don't know about you guys but I have 1 line from the motor which hooks up to both 6 gallon tanks with a simple quick push in and turn secure and release nozzle. I normally change tanks in less than 10 seconds, except when its rough out or I'm about to hit something..then it takes lonnnnnnnngger
I will want to upgrade to 2 12 gallon tanks for the Bahamas crossing and was wondering what brand
12 gallon gaz tank you guys with M's use ?
I think that with 36 gallons I should be safe to cross over from Palm Beach to Grand Bahamas right?

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks
This arragement looks great, just one question? Are the handles solid so you can cut them off 1/4 inch out from the tank.

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks
The tanks originally supplied with the "M"s was a Tempo LPT12 (p/n630013) and the dimensions were 18 1/2"d x 10"h X 24 5/8" long. This tank has been discontinued, but a possible replacement is The Moeller 31212. You will have to check the height to see if it will work.Québec 1 wrote:Howdy,

36 gallons should be plenty from everything I have seen. Where will you carry the extra 12 gallons?

What I meant to say was that I wanted to know if there were 4 - 6gal tanks that would fit under the coackpit seats. As for the extra 12 gallons , I was just going to lash my 2 existing 6 gallon tanks to the stanchions on the bow of the boat as I have found through experience that the more weight I have in the bow the faster my boat will motor.
Also thinking of putting a stabilizer on the motor to increase gaz consumption etc. https://www.adventuremarine.net/product ... &do=detail

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks
I took about 1/2 " off , maybe more , the lip all the way around and fitted a 12 gallon tank in to the locker .
Mine are Moeller and they are a low profile tank.
This enables me to carry 24 gallons in the same space. Also found out the plastic army issue jerry cans fit nicely under the helm seat 4 of them can go across , just right .
So thats an extra 20 gallons 44 gallons at 5 mpg = 220 mile cruise range minimum.

Re: Replacement Fuel Tanks
I like the idea of 4, 6 gallon tanks.Having to find gas over here is a PITA,i can fuel up for when i first go out,but after that i have to hunt for gas, last september i had to walk 4 miles to a gas station, crossing a sandy beach,it was a killer getting back with a full tank.Diesel is the fuel of choice here on the UK,s east coast.I only know of one marina that stocks gas and thats 100 + miles away,i generally get round the problem by calling in at 3 marinas that have a gas station within one mile.
4 x 6 gallon tanks would give me a cruising range of 200-240 miles
The weight of a 12 gallon tank would be inhibitive
