600W inverter/607W microwave

Post by commocean »

Any idea if this configuration would work? On medium?

Most microwave's wattages are rated at the output. The required input wattage is usually 25% higher. Also, cooking on reduced power settings only reduces the time that it cycles on and off, but when it is on, it is at full power. So, I would say that it would not work.

Don't think that will work
Just remember that the microwave will drain the batteries big time so you need a means of getting those batteries back up quick.
To stand a chance of working you will need 2 x 85 ah deep cycle batteries minimum and 700 watt inverter.
I used to run a hot water system with a 600 watt element from a 650 watt inverter but I had a big 12 volt generator that I ran at the same time to keep the batteries up.

Thanks for your replies, I read up on the topic more after posting and can see that there is no chance. Thanks again though.

By testing and failure;
A microwave of 750watts will not work well on a 1000watt inverter. We changed out customers inverter to a 1800watt. Worked fine. My recommendation is more defined than that even. Your E-tec motor has a 75amp alternator and with two standard Macgregor batteries will power up the whole system just fine. Run the motor while cooking! Figure that the inverter guys are off one way (their way) and the microwave estimators are off the other way (their way), it seems to take double what the figures show! You can use a microwave, just overbuild a bunch. The Democrats should make these folks do what they say! I wish Roger was running the country.

So.....if you get it working....I can share with you that it may take up to six minutes to heat a mug of water.....I have two 600-800 watt microwaves..a Samsung in a travel trailer and another brand in my Mac...lot quicker to use almost any other heating option....we have propane in the travel trailer, sometimes propane camp stove above deck on the Mac, an alcohol stove built in etc. We use a Honda 2000 on longer trips to supplement the engine generator. Although We also have double batts and a 1500w inverter, I only use these microwaves when on shore power and then only when my other options are all busy. 8) Tahoe Jack

..appreciate that to heat that cup of water you are:

burning fuel in the motor to turn an alternator (30% efficient)
The alternator makes electricity (60% efficient)
The microwave turns the electricity into microwaves (70% efficient)

Ill neglect the coupling of uwave into the water for the moment, the point being that of the fuel you have burned a whopping 12% makes it to your cup of coffee......
