Cats on board are a lot willing to train.
Regarding dogs I would suggest this.
Dogs are a lot diffrent than humans and other animals, they like to do their crap in farmiliar places but not onboard a small sailboat.
This I know works. Take the fecites and wipe on a small wooven rug and put it on deck, the dog will sniff it out and except it as a place to do potty and all you have to do is rince it off. The dog will adventually know that the pad is his place to do it's stuff every time.
Works for every dog I known.

I´m absolutely aware of the responsibiliy which is taken with an animal at home. As I´m I retired and we are living in a green embiance the general situation is given to take care of the dog. However I´m not sure about how this is accordable with staying on board of the :macx: especially if it´s not possible to land for more than one day :? . Sorry doe to my limited English I have to express it that hard  : Is it possible to teach a dog to sh~t in a box? Which would be the best breed of dog to take on board?
Friends of mine have a Australian Shepherd on board.

I asked them about it and they told me that in the Mediterranian Sea they were used to row the dog to an island for it´s sh~t until- all on it´s own- it started to jump into the water, swimm to the island, doing it´s job there and swimming back :o 8) .

I used to insist my dog poop in the aft berth (where I slept) and then I spread it around the berth cause I just LOVE that odor :!: :D

I have a 4 years old boxer dog. I tried to lure him on my boat many times without any success. He won’t even step on the dock. He is too heavy to carry (80 lb), if he freaks out we both will be in the water. It creates inconvenience for me in summer. I like to hang out in my yacht club on weekends and go sailing for a few hours. I can bring my dog to the yacht club but then I have to take him home if I want to go sailing. And I hate leaving him at home by himself for whole day during nice summer weekend. I feel jealous when I see how the other people bring their dogs on the boat.

Boat U.S. magazine had a really good article on this subject, and it was not that long ago. I just can't remember which issue it was in. Maybe someone on this board will have a better memory than I.

We were worried about our Boxer fearing the boat. He walked down the ock and jumped aboard before we could.

Good luck. Ace has been very good aboard and really seems to enjoy sailing. He stares at the blank horizon for minutes at a time

Hey dxg68,

I will be spending all winter trying to come up with a ramp system for Winslow(72lb), my rescue boxer, to get from the dink to the boat and then ramp to the interior as well. If I get a working model I will certainly post. I hope he takes to it. Like all boxers I've met, their number one concern is to be with their people. So, if your pup has 'issues" with the dock, or the boat. I would certainly ask an expert trainer for advice to make sure it's not correctable. And by correctable, I mean so the pup can have no fear stepping aboard either a dock or boat. Winslow has overcame so many obstacles it's just amazing and he just keeps impressing me at every turn...bring in a well respected, positive reinforcement expert, I think you'll be amazed at what can happen. Good luck and let us know how it works out! I will have to make sure my dude has extra flotation for all the metal he carries around in his arm too :( but he still thinks he's the fastest boxer on the planet :) :) :)

Gyroplanes,

I will show this picture to my dog tonight. Hopefully he will get embarrassed and will go sailing with me next year :) . Seriously you are lucky that your boxer goes with you. And we both know that the boxers are the best dogs in the world!!!

Our 75 pound, 5 year old Red and White Irish Setter has been sailing with us for 3 seasons. He just loves to be on the water sailing. If he thinks he will be left behind he raises cain. So, I guess we are very lucky to have a "salty dog" :) . He gets on board very easily; one end at a time!
