Reality Check

Post by AKCoastie »

I was in Charleston this last week and was eyeing a pretty nice 34ft Irwin for sale for $19,000. After playing the number game I researched the cost per month to slip it at a "cheap" marina. Holy crap I was not expecting that. It was on the lower end for that area and was still over $300 a month. Most other places I checked were that much or more unless it was on a military base. Kind of puts the $30,000+ price tag for a new M more in perspective. Is this average for what you are seeing year round slip fees going for or do they get much more expensive?

$125/month, no contract, near Nashville, on the Cumberland River, Old Hickory Lake, Drakes Creek

About the same for a 25' boat, like the Mac 26, on Percy Priest Lake, Stones River, Nashville, but with contract.

Nashville ( and much of the maligned South ) has an all-around less expensive cost-of-living, great lakes, but alas, no beaches, no bluewater sailing.
You can reach Nashville and beyond, up-upstream via the navigable Cumberland RIver, via the Ohio via Mississippi Rivers, but the Stones River has no locks at its dam.

$200/mo on San Francisco Bay (South San Francisco,) and I'm paying for a 30' slip. I believe there is a drastic difference between public and private marinas. I pay an additional $100/mo to store the trailer. It's actually mast-up storage, but eventually, I go the slip as well. I use my boat a lot and being able to get an extra hour & half sailing by eliminating launches & haulouts makes it worth the expense, at least to me.

I pay $1750 per season on the Saginaw Bay, which is pretty typical. Problem is, it's only about a 5 month season (if that). That's $350/month. And this wasn't the greatest of years for me to make time for sailing. ^%$#@!!

Next year will be better.

Along the south shore of Long Island NY, I pay the town for the town dock $50 per foot for the season Apr-Oct w/free electric. BTW it's ~ 3yr waiting list. North shore, the "Gold Coast" has up to 25 year waiting list for the town dock.
Private marinas charge $80-$110 per foot/season, south shore. Add ~$20 for the north shore, and the Peconics/Hamptons/Sag Harbor areas command up to $200 ft or more, plus electric. Sure wonder why Billy Joel had an issue with rights/ownership regarding Sag Harbor! Show ME the MONEY!!

$650 / season, no electric though. Nice bathrooms showers, laundry, convenience store with wine, beer and boating supplies.
Contrast that to my friend in New Jersey who was getting charged $11,500 / season, metered electric, but they did have a pool and free WiFi.

I pay $475 for sailing-season, $425 for off-season, for a "dry slip" (mast-up trailer storage) at Casa Rio Marina. (It would be $100 per month, on a month-to-month basis.) That's on the Rhode River, between Annapolis and Deale, MD. It's an hour's drive from home, which isn't bad - even in the tow vehicle.

BTW, Casa Rio quoted me about $3000 a year, for a slip that would fit a 30-foot keelboat. Add haulout and bottom paint, and my MacGregor looks better and better.

However, I'm bringing her to an "Extra Space" storage facility close to home, just for this winter. I have some ambitious projects for belowdecks on Bossa Nova, and driving an hour each way ...

$2088.00 US dollars at Point Roberts for a 30' slip. Good for a 26' Mac with the engine and rudders sticking out. They charge length over the water.
$2366.40 US dollars for a 34' boat.
