Re: Channel Islands
THERE IS NOTHING ON THE CHANNEL ISLANDS. YOU CANNOT GO ON THE ISLAND WITHOUT A PERMIT.NO FOOD NO GAS NADA, AS i UNDERSTAND FISHING IS NOW LIMITED...... I would sail from Ventura to Santa Cruz to pelican or Prisoners bay. Sail back to Ventura then trailor to Long Beach and stay at Avalon. Make sure you get there on a week day to get a mooring 25.00 per night. Great food, swiming and sailing. If all you have is a week then I would go to Catalina and hang out.Reminds me of the Med.

That's exactly what we did. Sailed to Catalina. Spent 4 days there. Sailed back. Great times. Saw the smoke from the fires from the water. Eerie stuff. Huge mushroom cloud.

Re: Channel Islands
Sorry for the long hiatus. The trip was fabulous. We arrived at San Pedro around 3 am, 2 hours before the park opened. Took a quick nap and entered the park. We were both too exhausted to rig so we climbed inside the boat and slept for a while. Got up, rigged and launched. San Pedro leaves much to be desired but it was the most convenient location.
Had to motor out a few miles since there was no wind, but once we got a few miles off shore, we got a nice gentle breeze which got us all the way to Catalina under sail. We arrived at Two Harbors (isthmus cove.) Nice and quaint. Stayed a day there and motored to Avalon. Had a really nice time in Avalon. We were fortunate to get a mooring for a couple nights. The best way to describe it for those who haven't been is a mixture of Disneyland, Las Vegas and a Caribbean Island. Take away the casinos and the amusement park and you have the town of Avalon. It was a great time, but after a few days, we had our fill.
We sailed off back to the mainland in a gentle breeze which quickly built to about 15 knots and kept building to 25 knots. We must have been going against the tide since I couldn't break 5 knots on the GPS, though we were on a beat. Got home safe & sound. No incidents (kinda nice for a change.)
Thank you everyone for all the info and ideas.
