Mine doesn't have a plate for the serial number either. Just the numbers that are molded into the hull. They are hard to see unless you are looking for them.

That is correct, and I believe all the Mac boats are marked twice.

I looked all over the starboard stern.
I mounted an outboard bracket on the sten and the 4 HP johnson I had there might have whipped off the plate
Can not find it in the battery box without pulling both batteries---can not see all the box with both bateries in .
Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I believe it is a US or perhaps international regulation that the manufacturer's number will appear on the starboard side of the transom, above the water line. In the case of Mac's it is located just below the rub-rail on the transom, molded into the fiberglass (i.e. not a plate). In addition, Mac's have a plate inside. Mine is on the frame of the aft galley settee, where the battery would normally be (my batteries are reolcated to under the V-berth.)

Similarly, my Boston Whaler Harpoon has a plate affixed to the starboard transom, adjacent to the rub-rail.

The number should also be on all your registration documents where a car has the VIN number.

My 96 X has a brass plate on the starboard transom as well a a brass plate in the normal battery location aft of the galley. It is on the outside, not in with the batteries. Nothing has to be removed to see it except the seat cushion.

There is another number molded into the gel coat near the transom plate but this is not the hull serial number. I would guess it is a tracking number used in the factory.

Vessel ID numbers are prescribed by the USCG to follow this mask:

MACX.hull.AY.my
MACX = manufacturer and design, 26X (or MACM = 26M)
hull = the serial number of the hull, runs continuously for a given design.
AY = assembly date; A thru L = assembly month; single digit = calendar year.
my = "model year" begins on July 1 each year and continue thru the following June 30.

Hence mine, MACX0405L596, a Macgregor 26x hull number 0405 built in December 1995 to model year 1996 specs.

Yes, that's correct, Duane, but be advised that the numbering system changed sometime in the 1970's, so although it will work for our boats, it is not accurate for older ones.

mac800200l596

Some of it makes sense, but not all

You say the boat is a 26X, the first part should be

MACX, not MAC8. Check again, all X's are MACX.

There seems to be an extra digit in your next series of numbers.
00200 would indicate that it is hull number 200. Usually this is only 4 digits.

The final part is just like mine

L5 means the boat was completed in December (L) of 1995.

96 means the boat was built to 1996 model year design specifications.

This is the exact same as my boat, yet my hull number is 0405. They must have made your hull #200 quite a bit before mine then had it sitting around unfinished until they completed the boat in December 1995, the same month they completed my boat from hull #405.
