macgregor 26M 60HP
I live in Spain and my new Mac made in april 09 is here, now distributor must place motor engine, I want to have a 60 hp but distributor said me that is not possible 60 hp because motor touch at bold sides of rear site when boat is sailing and motor turn together with rudder and I must use 50 HP engine.
Distributor said me than is hard to dismount each time bar for work at same time rudder and engine.
Any solution or any suggestion?. Could any one help me?
My e-mail is: cmur.ellorens@gmail.com

Carlos;
I don't fully understand the problem you are describing - - - but many. many Macs here have 60 HP outboards.
One suggestion - - - your English is probably good enough to call the factory and ask for Mike Inmon and explain it to him. He will guide you correctly. He has installed MANY 60's on Macs.
Good Luck!
Rick

Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
The Merc 50 and 60 are the same engine size - it is just a chip in the internal computer that is the big difference. The E-tec 75 or Honda 75 is physically smaller than the Mercs, I forget which, but the point is - as previously mentioned - the size is not really a problem. Sounds like your dealer is trying to move his inventory or has a sweet deal on a particular product and he is manipulating you into it. A properly mounted motor does not come anywhere close to hitting the rudders on an M, you have room to step up into the boat between them.

Hi Carlos...Your English is a whole lot better than my Spanish...Your dealer is " having a piece of you"..." I think he is overstocked with 50's. Go back and ask him to "TRY AGAIN".
I have even thought it may be possible to mount a nice stainless pipe "box" frame on the
transom and then fit the motor to it. this would put the motor further out equal to the thickness of the frame...Also check out the mod I posted on the aluminium frame marlin board...allows easy access to the stern from each side of the motor...as well as forming a platform to work on the motor if needed. Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
Distributor, I do not want to have problem with him, said me that the problem is Suzuky 60 HP is too big and touch walls of the boat when engine is out to the water for sail.
Only solution is to disconnect engine each time thanI sail. Engine inside water when I sail could made my Mac too slow.
But for me is not problem to disconnect if is easy to do.
And sorry again for my inglish.

Probably a half knot or so difference at most. If you want the bigger engine for powering, this seems like a good trade-off (compromiso)Engine inside water when I sail could made my Mac too slow.

Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
carlos stop!!!!!!!, Take a minute to think about it. You pretty much went through a lot of expense time and effort just to get the mac, now you should have it the way you want.
Disconnect can be had from BWY that will disconnect any engine you put on the boat in about 5 seconds, I just put a 115 merc on mine and the disconnect works on that.
You are right to get the 60 over the 50, almost all the manufactures of engines the 60 and the 50 are the same engine, except suzuki. Dont limit yourself to just a 4 stroke, consider the new 2 strokes also.
If you have to buy the boat with out an engine and get an engine from some one else.
Deciding on an engine for me would be determined by the dealerships in your area, if all you have in town is a honda dealership, then thats what I would put on my boat, if all you have is merc, then thats what I would put on my boat. See what I mean?
Take your time to think about it, get what you want, not what the mac distributor has to offer, unless thats what you want. When I bought my boat I had little choice to the engine package I could get, the dealer assured me that the suz that came with my boat (all he offered) was ideal, it wasnt. I should have just bought the boat and had the engine I wanted installed by someone else, or myself.
Good luck keep us informed of what you do

Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
Ohhh if the dealer pulls crap like you have to buy an engine from him, then buy a 3 hp kicker placed on the transom, you are going to get a dingy some day right?
Speaking of dealers, I dont know why the dealers do it, But the buyers depend on the dealer's vast knowledge about our boats, why do the dealers insist on making the boat the dealers way instead of listening to the buyer and working around his wants in needs? There are so many options, that can fit the bill for so many buyers. That etec 60 hp you see so many now on the macs, a couple years ago when I was helping some people get into a mac, They were told the suzuki 50 was the best engine, but at the time a couple boats were out fitted with the etec 50 and the owners loved them, when I got a ride on one, I couldnt believe the difference between my suz and the e tec 50, so I recommended to any one that would listen to get the etec 60 (same engine as the etec 50) The dealer balked at this when those customers came to him with the request. He still complied but all kinds of scary scenarios were presented to the potential buyer.
I couldnt believe the kinds of things the dealer was telling these people, from the motor is 600 dollars more than the 50 and its not worth it, to the boat cant handle that kind of power. All the dealer had to do was put that engine on their own test boat and try it before they made those claims. Well they did, 6 or so months after I was recommending the engine and disputing the claims to potential buyers. Guess what the dealer went almost standard to install that etec 60 on all the boats after that. But what about those people that were scared into settling for the 50?
Its still true today in the 50hp class you cant get a better engine on the mac, as far as performance and weight, as the 60 etec, Because of the weight and physical size and power, its ideal for the mac over all the 4 strokes. Doesnt mean the 4 strokes are bad, it just means best engine for a particular boat.
True story, just yesterday I ordered some parts from a mac dealer (no names) and as we were making the list out I mentioned I put a 115 on my mac. Right away the dealer said Im going to break the mac in half. I said wow, really? even if I take it easy? they said yes. I said how many broken macs have you seen like that? (I was really concerned some) They havent seen any, but know it will break in half.
Yet they recommend the 75hp for those that want better performance. Do they not know that the 115 and the 75 are exactly the same engine? Do they have special boats from mac that are made better to accommodate the 75hp, That they recommend? or maybe they only tested their macs with an engine to 75hp.

Re: macgregor 26M 60HP
Not sure I understand what you said. The suzuki 40/50 are the same three cylinders and 243 pounds, the 60 has 4 cylinders and 359 lbs. Granted not a big difference. But other brands the standard are more the 50-60 are the same engine, etec for one, as well as mercury, Yamaha.
But again not sure what you are saying, but bottom line get informed, and choose what you want, not what the dealer has, if it doesnt meet your wants. Biggest frustration I had with my boat was the almost does it feeling, it just didnt perform as I was told or expected, but almost.
Hint to those buying a new mac, read the posts here, any one that posts a question about whats the best prop to use to get better performance, stay away from that engine. Most of those posts are people trying to get past the "almost does it", by changing the prop. Prop will not make that much difference, A couple miles and hour, maybe, and thats if the boat was propped way off in the first place.
First time the boat gets into a swells , no matter what prop they have will realize the boat controls the smaller engine, the engine will wallow no matter what. If you are already at full throttle then the engine and boat will slow down a few mph and there's nothing you can do about it. There is and never was a substitute for horse power. Nobody ever complained that they have to much power in their boat, always that they dont have enough.
Carlos I know you didnt ask for all this, but other people read this stuff and I was covering all the bases.
