Plexiglass or lexan door

Post by Mike Hockey »

Hi everybody, this is my second post,

I just acquired a 2003 Mac M. I brought it safely home on a 1 400 km tow thanks largely to your advices. :)

The previous owner took great care of her, but replaced temporarely the door for reasons of his own.

I would now have to change the door from a 1/4 inch plywood to 1/4 inch plexiglass or lexan matching the windows color. What color are the windows of the Mac M? My best guess would be «bronze 2404»...What do you know? :?:

Thanks for your help. Your help that was crucial for the successful journey from Windsor to Jonquiere (spare tire, bearings, etc), thanks again. :)

Mike.

Thanks Nice Aft and Quebec 1,

I continued my research and I think I found what I need.

Lexan is manufactured by GE, after a dispute about licence rights that what settled out of court. They produce two colors of «yellowish» lexan, color which is labelled «bronze». One of these colors is far too opaque to be used as a window. The other one lets about 50% of the light coming through. It is poetically called «Bronze 509». I went to the local Rona (quite like HD) and looked at it. Really looks like the Mac 2003 window.

So if you need lexan to replace your 2003 window, or make a door, Lexan bronze 509 is what to look for. 8)

I will glue a nice tinted 1/2 inch wooden frame to the lexan board, 1 inch inside the outside perimeter of the lexan board to give it stiffness. If a can figure out how to use «photobucket» in the meantime, I will then post a photograph. :)

Thanks for your help guys,

Mike

P.S. @ Quebec 1 : will be pleased to meet you on the St-Jean lake this summer. But as far as racing is concerned, I am afraid you will have to share a few tricks if you really want some competition, I have 5 days experience in sailing......(no kidding) and which is worse, on a C & C 29 !!! :P Actually, I believe I am the only Mac owner who has more experience towing a Mac than sailing it. Actually, I NEVER ever sailed a Mac in my life..... :D

Mike,

Just be aware, that during the day the dark color will give privacy, but during the night, anyone on a dock where you may be slipped, will be able to see inside, that is, if your cabin lights are on. It is that way with the dark windows of the Mac, and it will be the same with the companion way hatch.

Hi Mike,
I visited a glass shop 2 yrs back, and the fella had some extra "smoke" tint lexan remnant on hand. He cut it for me, and I drilled it for a small stainless handle. Its been a nice mod, makes the cabin appear less cramped along with better light and view from inside. Privacy at night is a problem, which we solved by hanging short window curtains (blue matching the interior of our 'X'). Works great.

Incidentally, we've since made a screened companion way door, and another door which has a cut-a-way for our small window unit. All work real well.

Note: the lexan door been one of my favorite mods.

Thanks Niceaft, I hadn't thought of it. :? If i were staying at a marina, a curtain might be necessary, but I have a lot on a 20 miles long lake. So I will be on my own on my private pier most of the time. :)

Nevertheless, will make the door so it would be easy to add a curtain.
