Lake of the Ozarks (MO)
On a visit to the US from OZ we were visiting friends in the Lake of the Ozarks and was surprised how few sail boats were on the lake. I saw only one Oday 240. I found the place ideal for sailing with a steady breeze the whole time during our stay. The only problem I could see would be all the powerboats flying past. Here in OZ one must not go faster than 5 knots within 50 meters of another boat. I just wonder if the same regulation exists in the US.

The 37-year-old woman who was killed when a speedboat rammed into an anchored sailboat on Lake Washington was identified this morning as music teacher Heather DeHart of Bothell.
Witnesses said a motorboat, piloted by a 17-year-old boy, was traveling at a high rate of speed before it struck the stationary sailboat Saturday night, Seattle police said.
The 17-year-old, his 16-year-old passenger and a 45-year-old man aboard the sailboat were taken to Harborview Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries. A third man on the sailboat was uninjured, police said.
Seattle police and fire officials said DeHart was thrown from the sailboat and killed on impact when the motorboat collided with the rear end of the sailboat around 8:45 p.m.
The teenage driver, whose name has not been released, was questioned and released, Witt said.
Records show that DeHart was a music teacher at Tyee Middle School in the Bellevue School District.
The accident occurred west of Mercer Island, off the 4500 block of Lake Washington Boulevard South near Seattle's Seward Park. Police did not say whether the crash was within 100 yards of the shoreline, where the speed limit is 7 knots, or 8 mph.
Witt said witnesses on shore said the motorboat hit the sailboat, went up over the back of it and struck the woman. Witt said witnesses told police the sailboat was anchored at the time of the crash. She did not know whether its lights were on, making it visible to other boats.
Seattle police are still investigating the accident.
Last year, more than 26 people died in boating accidents in Washington state, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Boaters between the ages of 12 and 20 are required to take a one-time basic boating-safety class to obtain the Boating Safety Education Card required by the state. The law, which eventually will apply to everyone born after Jan. 1, 1955, applies to anyone who operates a boat powered by a motor with at least 15 horsepower.
It wasn't immediately known whether the teen driver had taken the course.

Re: Lake of the Ozarks
Agreed, the Lake of the Ozarks is insane--especially during summertime weekends. I live near the Lake of the Ozarks but tend to boat on a half dozen other large lakes. I personally don't want more government intrusion restricting water ways any more but the Lake of the Ozarks is a billion dollar tourist industry for Missouri. Common sense is ignored. There are too many irresponsible boaters sometimes under the influence but often purely ignorant of good seamanship. Many of them seem to have more money than sense. Sorry, mid Missouri soap box.
I'm so glad you got to visit our state; to bad you didn't get an opportunity to visit some of the other large lakes here which are great waterways yet more sane in usage. My sailboat is too small to safely play on the lower end of the Lake of the Ozarks, when I finally can afford a Mac 26, I'll brave that lake on weekends too. As it is, I've ceased taking my 19 foot powerboat to the Lake of the Ozarks during the summertime weekends. That said, I've sailed a 27 foot sloop near the scout camp at the 46 mile marker from the dam. People were more respectful at that end of the lake. Other than some very cantankerous winds, we had a blast! Hope you get to visit again in the future!

That reminded me. At the scout camp there were 4-5 sail boats. I asked what they were, but the guardian (He only puts them in the water and takes them out), didn't know the makes o0f any of them. We do love the Lake of the Ozarks, our friends live near the 41 mile mark and it is always fun visiting them.

Re: Lake of the Ozarks
We took our scout troop this summer to that camp (Hohn Scout Reservation) for the sailmaster program. It was a great experience for the boys and it was amazing to see which boys were natural sailors who understood what needed to be done. They have an aged fleet of mixed boat models. I think the two down on the water this summer were both catalinas. THat's such a peaceful end of the lake. I grew up going to a place at the 3 mile marker...very crowded there now days.

Re: Lake of the Ozarks (MO)
If and when the Housing Market freshens in and around Chicago we are out of here . . .so I have been contacting and looking in a lot of places.
Overall most reasonable places with nice sailing lakes/water still comes down to......... Drum roll please and this is IMHO.
#1. Missouri. Lake Stockton and Table Rock Lake
#2. Arkansas. Lake Maumelle Beaver Lake Norfork Greer Ferry Bull Shoals.
#3. Barkley and Kentucky Lakes etc.
For me it included cost to buy and cost to own. Lots of great Places to live but they are very costly. Port Charlotte FLA. and $300K will buy a decent place and pretty close to the Harbor but $4000 a year wont pay your taxes and $3000 a year might not pay your home owners insurance car insurance is double that of IL Mo Ar as well.
Some places are for us,...... just to country...without hurting anyones feelings. We're spoiled we cannot live like that.

Cappyg,
I remember a magazine ad I saw a few years ago about a condo development for boaters on that lake. It was built on an island, maybe
I heard it fell on bad times. Do you recall any of this

Back then, the condo island ( we call lighthouse island ) used to be 'the Hawaiian island marina'. The Lake of the Ozarks is the closest to my farm but I tend to sail multiple different lakes.
What is the name of your
This was a video compilation of a solo sail I took on the Lake of the Ozarks back in October. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PKkZcNcTi4 I sailed within 40 feet of the docks on that island. Sad, most of the condos were bare and empty, slips too!
Merry Christmas everyone!

Re: Lake of the Ozarks (MO)
Watched your video. Looks like a great sailing lake for an inland destination. I am six hours northwest. I will put that on my to do list with the CM30. We vacationed there last year and rented a pontoon. Pontoon boats are not my bag, would have lots more fun on a sailing boat.
Your comment in the video about power boaters. Do you think ducks say bad things about geese when they come in for a landing? People are just people. Do not expect them to be as polite as the family pet. They are wilder than that. Lol
I like it when I get buzzed by a boat. I like to see and hear what people have for toys. Babes on the boat are good also! The wakes are why I sail, so I can feel alive in the water. Powerboats can buzz me, circle me, spray me, and make me feel good about also being on a boat. I have a friend with a $200,000 boat on that lake. Several inboard large blocks inside. Long long long boat. He drives like a mad man. I would love to have him buzz me, but I ain't ridding with him. He also has a sand buggy. I rode with him once. Once was enough.

Re: Lake of the Ozarks (MO)
On the lower end of Lake of the Ozarks, if a boater were to limit his speed to '5 within 50 meters of another boat', he'd never get over 10.
We love that lake, but limit our visits to after Sept 1.
Much quieter then, but still the occasional forty-foot power boat at forty knots.
We've only power-boated on it, but were seriously thinking of hauling the Mac down there, about 5 hours drive.
