LED Tailights

Post by Greg »

On my last trip home from the lake, I noticed the right turn signal had stopped working. On inspection I saw corrosion at the socket even though it was a “sealed” unit. I replaced both tail/brake lights with sealed LED units and so far I’m impressed with them. They light up faster than the old ones and are much brighter which should increase the safety margin. They were more expensive, close to $50 at Advance Auto, but they should last longer than the old style.

I also recently installed LED lights on my trailer, as well as a new wiring harness & forward facing amber LEDs on the fenders. All connections & splices soldered & shrink tubed. All that is left is to better secure the wiring harness to the steel trailer frame with wiring clips.

I put new ones on mine as well. Boaters World had a great kit for only $49. Not only does it have fully sealed LED tail lights, but the wiring harness in included has a dedicated ground wire to each light. No more messing with the silly trailer frame ground connection which is the cause of most trailer light problems. I highly recommend you look for this on any new light installation.

I have had LEDs on my trailer for 3 years, and they have been great. The only issue I have had has been a bad ground, but the lights have been great.
Looks very strange when the lights are on and the trailer is submerged.

I have LED's on the trailer also and they work great. They are much brighter than the old filament lamps.

Despite having separate ground wires I did have a problem with salt water shorting at a junction until I sealed all the junctions with with liquid electrical tape. Since then, no problems.

Seeing the lights operating underwater was interesting so now I'm thinking about fitting some white LED's to the hull... :)
