Vehicles by tow capacity

Post by DaveC426913 »

I am in the market for a Mac so I'm going to want replace my vehicle in order to tow it.

I would rather not change my vehicle-preference dramatically. I currently drive a mid/full-size performance/luxury sedan (a Chrysler 300M - the older model). I'd rather not go to a truck, minivan or SUV if I can avoid it (though there seem to be some pretty non-monstrous SUVs out there). I do like Chrysler.

I have a habit of buying 5 year old cars, so in a year or two when I'm ready I guess I'll be looking at '05s or thereabouts.

Tow capacity is not something most online brochures seem to list so the task of comparing all possible candidates is doubly difficult.

I did read (all the way) through the tow beast roll call thread - looks like 99% are trucks or SUVs.

Does anyone have any advice for finding and comparing vehicles with Class II tow cap.?

As I had posted earlier, mine is a Toyota Highlander Hybrid. If the boat is not overstocked it works fine and the gas milage is actually the best when towing - becasue I drive in a less "leadfooted" manner while towing :)

I get better milage than most mid-sized cars.

My truck as well as a similar weight car will have trouble on a soft ramp however.

These days though, with the US economy being what it is, you may find a really good price just to leave it in the water at a marina and keep a small car. I have a friend selling docks on the east coast and he says repo guys are everywhere and a lot of people aren't even putting their boats back in the water. Marinas will probably be giving deals... It's a lot easier just to put up the sails and go.

Trailerboats.com provides an evaluation of the tow capacity of many vehicles.

This is a topic which has been visited many times at this forum. I suggest doing a search. You will find much information about the personal opinions of site members, but you will also find info about what particular publications printed. Do the search, and get better informed about what is stored here.

A note to all about using the new search features: The search box at the top right of most pages is a global search and will search all forums. Use a + in front of words that must be found. On the advanced search page, you must select the forums that you wish to search. Multiple forums may be selected by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking on the forums that you wish to search.

I will, but that will still only get me piecmeal info. I was really hoping for something more comprehensive comparing apples to apples.

That link will be a big help.

I'm not certain what that means?

Some of the info posted has been on articles about tow vehicles in general. Not just "What do you drive" opinions. For example, I just did a search on ARTICLE ON TOW VEHICLE. This is what popped up.........
Anyone who is interested in a new tow vehicle may wish to read the list from the article (2008 SUV TOWING & MILEAGE GUIDE) in the March issue of BOATUS MAGAZINE. Page 28.

It just happens to have been posted by me. Really! I forgot I had posted it. Image
Truth be told, I did not read it again just now, and I don't remember what it said, but it came up with my first attempt. Doing searches is often tedious. There are much more interesting things to do on the Internet :D
