To be Hanked on means that instead of a furler system, the jib is held on by a Hank. A Hank is a ring, or shackle that secures the luff of the Jib to the wire holding the mast from falling backwards. Which in turn is what pulls the jib up to its secure position. This explanation is really simplified, but what it means is that a hanked jib is pulled up, and a furled jib is rolled out like you would unwind a spool of string.
