Disabled sailing

Post by Jim »

Greetings all. This has nothing to do with Macs, but thought some might find it of interest. Our yacht club (www.pyc.ca)hosted a regatta this weekend for people with disabilites called Mobility Cup.It is an international Regatta and we were fortunate to have sailors from the USA, Japan , Scotland as well as from all across Canada. They sail Martin 16 boats,. Many of the athletes were either parapalegics, or quadrapalegics. The boats are rigged so the can be handled by disabled sailors, even so far as to be sailed by using mouth controls on a "sip and puff system". It seemed not to matter how the races outcome went as long as they were on the water and doing what they all love to do....sail. I for one got my eyes opened as I helped then in and out of their boats. I have never seen so many smiling faces as theirs when they docked their boats as I saw these last few days. It is just another obsticle they have over come, and perhaps we can all learn from them..I dont think they know how to say "I can't".Next August the Regatta will be held in Calgary Alberta. I would encourage anyone who wants to see first class racing, to take it in.Perhaps you , like me and many others will come away with a bit of a different outlook on things....Fair winds

Kinda makes my fight with cancer seem trivial... At least my arms and legs are still attached and working somewhat. Hopefully I'll be back out there next year. Thanks for the reality check and good on you for helping out.
