Opie,

I have this same problem. Part #3 is rusting on my 1996 Honda BF50. I haven't done anything to it, but I'm going to take your advice and pack it with grease.

I'm Rusty too

I actually noticed it a couple of years ago... I not surprised since it is just an engine from a civic car.... here is what mine looks like:

I also have rust forming under a black plasitic cap, where the tilt pivots, so much that the cap is breaking from the rust expanding. Pic below:

I'll just keep and eye on it and some grease.... oh and I keep mine on the trailer next to my house.

Opie, thats the part and rusting bad on Starboard side, Port side is fine.
I don't have a shop manuel and looks like the shaft come up thru it, it may be so simple to just remove the steering bracket and the two bolts holding it.....can't be that simple..can it?

It has the two bolts at the top that hold it to the engine. Hard to believe that only the 2 of us have this problem. Do you think that everyone else wit a BF50A has aluminum frames? Poll?

Opie, I just searched the years in parts and noticed 2004 Item 3 was priced at $94.49 and part # were diffrent. In 2000 the price was same.
I just went out and started scrapping off the rust and it's light surface flakes. I am going to use a dremil tool and get off what I can than use a rust remover and sealer 3 coats than spray white lithum greas in there and keep a eye on it.

Thanks for the alert! I just checked my "98 50 horse this morning and was dismayed to see heavy rust at the bottom of the piece. However, in addition, there has heavy rusting around the top of the electric motor case driving the hydraulic pump.

I'll force grease up the shaft and hope for the best. However, I'm not sure at this point what to do with rusting around the electric motor case.

I am certainly disillusioned about Honda now. The only problem I have had up to now was the need to replace cracked jets in the carbs. Even this with Honda's prices is considerable.
