Did some reading about Spot, both from their site and an independent review. The reviewer didn't like the $150/year service cost, and points out that in 5 years, the total investment would equal cost of a personal locator beacon unit. There are questions about the satellite system it uses, Globalstar, because of their troubles with Globalstar satellite phones. Long term survival of the company as well as future service price increases are also potential concerns. Apparently the company is marketing the device at very little profit, and plans on making their money with the annual service charges.

EPIRB
I have a manual actuated GPS-406 EPIRB on board, cruising the SEA of CORTEZ. The most I can hope for if I get into trouble is that the US Coastguard will notify my family and the Mexican Navy. There is no search and rescue operation in Mexican waters or anyone monitoring this signal in Mexico. I do carry a Meridian 9505 satellite phone which comes in very handy, but it only has the callout mode.
