26M Dinghy Kicker Mount

Hi Folks,
I'm a new 26M owner and needed a way to mount a kicker. I researched this site and found no solutions. So, I designed and built a mount that hangs on the railing around the flying seats.

I've tried it on the water and it rides very nicely. I would never trailer it on the road with outboard mounted to the flying seat. The outboard stays in the truck bed when trailering.

I believe the flying seat can easily accomodate this load when the boat is in the water. The weight of the outboard is about 50 pound. This design translates the weight of the outboard to the seat of the flying seat. Since the flying seat is designed to accomodate a full size man, the seat can handle this load easily. There is a approximately 10 pound force pushing aft on the railing. Again, that force is small compared to a full size man leaning back in the flying seat.

The marine grade plywood and redwood 2x4s were scrap material in my shop. So, all that this cost me was the 1/4" flathead ms, washers and self-locking nuts.

Being a newby, it's hard to post images to this web site...

So, go to the photobucket website and search for katie_mae_album. The first two pictures are of the outboard mount.

Notice the hole drilled in the seat that catches the dowel protruding from the bottom of the mount. Also, notice that the 2x4s fit tighly under the railing. These features hold the mount firmly in place when the plywood sanwich is bolted together.

Do you have any shots of the kicker in place, and working? How does the boat sail with the kicker in place? How difficult is it to raise and lower the kicker, and how long does it take? Since there has to be some vibration, how regularly do you check the screws at the braces under the stern rail seats for looseness.

Can this also be used as a pusher for the 26M?

Thats a Garelick mount - you can see that and buy it from Defender.

I use one on my Island 17 on which I mount a 3-6 HP kicker (depending on how many people up I am)

With my light kicker (27 pounds) I removed three of the kick up springs so that the spring action balanced the motor weight.

Its a well constructed piece of kit, priced at about 100 USD IIRC

I used a similar mount in my recent 26X mod...BTW, the top pic is in error...I accessed the upper mount bolts via another access port, if you PM, I could send the correct pic...suppose I need to edit the post..

Is there any interference with the ruders up?
Can you still turn fully right and left?

I know that John has created an ingenious attempt at kicker placement om an M (an X's stern is different from an M), but I question the leveraged weight placed on the stern rail seat. The longer the wooden plank extends beyond the seat, the greater the leverage placed downward on the two supports from the seat going into the hull, and upward at the front edge of the seat. The vibration of the motor along with its weight (I theorize) is placing more strain on the seat than it was designed to take. The weight of an adult, is placed more evenly, and, over a wider area. That last comment was not intended to be directed towards any one's posterior, and nobody should take it personally Remember, this is coming from someone who's boat is named Nice Aft

Being someone who believes that the stern rail seats are the best seats on the boat; I would be very hesitant to lose the use of one. I like the idea of a kicker motor, but not at the loss of one of those precious seats. There is no right or wrong here. Weighing the advantages and disadvantages of that sort of placement is a very individualistic decision. That is why I would like to see pictures of the unit in action.

Hvolkart......we have no turn restrictions with rudders all up, or all down, however, as noted in my mod text, you need to be near neutral to raise or lower. I suggest you do a carefull mock-up with your motor and proposed mount...cycle everything etc before trying an install. Lots of variables...motors, mounts, and X vs M. hvolkhart... Just yesterday I completed mounting a similar dinghy mount to the starboard area of the transom, outside the rudder on my X. Made by Fulton. It was a bear to get to all the bolts inside the hull, but I cut an access panel in the interior liner inside the transom area to get it done. I replaced the supplied carriage bolts with s.s. hex bolts and lock nylock nuts, and had a helper to assist with the install. It's very sturdy. I won't get a chance to use it on the water for a few weeks yet, but by mearsurement only, it doesn't interfere with steering with rudders up or down. A sea trial will result in pictures and a report on the results to the mod forum. I have a Nissan 6 hp, 4 stroke. It will be the auxilary motor when I don't take along the mast for runs up creeks and bayous with low bridges.

here is my redneck dingy motor mount - scrap plywood, metal strap attached to a sideways mounted antenna extension (built as the bbq mount!)

I do plan on making it prettier, but it is still being tested
