Although not a fun task, emtying the porta potty is not as bad as I originally thought.

I also like the idea of the composter (except for the price) that Eric has, but according to my measurements it is 3 inches higher than the 5 gallon porta potty.

In the M, its a tight fit on the shelf without giving up another 3 inches? Sideways and off the shelf maybe, but then you give up knee space?

As for the mods, (I am not the first to say this). Don't rush to quickly the first year. Once you figure out your space and how to store things to your liking, and get to know the boat and how you use it, you may change your mind on things a dozen times.

We purchased our 07M last year and all I did was install a stereo and take some enhanced sailing options (lines lead aft, motor, gauges and controls that I liked). I had plans to do losts of things, but have changed my mind numerous times on which way is best.

WE. . . . . have the large porta potty and I have the job of emptying it...
Its really not all that bad. You can do it right at your slip at night, if the tide is running right. :D

Greetings from Alberta. Where are you located? I'd be getting the genny on a R/F instead of the jib. Most people around here buy the jib only to turn around a year or 2 later and buy a Genoa. Don't worry about the porta potti, sure it's kind of a pain to empty but it's not that bad. Another way to look at it is ... where you sail, is there a pump out facility? It's easier to find a toilet to dump it into than a pump out station. Make sure to get all your lines run aft and look into a single line reefing system for your main. It's cheap and handy. The 50 is more than sufficient for a motor a 70 would definately be nicer but if you're on a budget, they extra coin you save can be used for a plotter or something of the like. Don't forget to but a good BBQ on the rail as well, it's nice to cook the fish outside and not stink up the interior, not to mention all the other fishermen (women) get a kick out of "that guy on the sailboat" frying fish and fishing at the same time.

Holding tanks are great until they leak......
Unfortunately, I had a very intimate experience with this. Posted a while ago when it occured. Spent something like 8 hours total cleaning up. I'm not sure if there is another brand out there other than Sanipoti that fits the Mac, but if there is, I would go with it. I had two tanks leak on me in a one year span. The first was a nightmare as all contents spilled. The flimsy cap for the pumpout broke. The second was an actual crack in the tank itself. It was minor so it didn't make nearly the mess the first one did, but sure ruined the day. I'm referring to the Sanipoti 5-gal tank with pumpout valve. Be affraid. Be very affraid :P

I must find a better set up than our current 5 gal Sanipoti w/pumpout.

That tank sucks!

Very weak and has to overhang as it is not completely supported at the base due to the M's layout.

I DO NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH WHAT OTHERS LIKE LEON HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH :| :!:  :o :(

I still think the SWAG bags are the best way to go for a head. I know virtually no one uses them, but they make sense.. and DO NOT leak! Nothing to dump into a toilet. No water tank to store. Zero maintenance.

Do what you need to do, toss in the trash on shore. End of story.

I am outvoted by the first mate.. oh well!

On our 05 M we installed the same setup as Tom Nine (Apr 1/05) shows in the mods section under head.

We placed a 13 gal holding tank, y valve & macerator pump under the front settee. We also have a deck pumpout to use at the marina. The fresh water for the toilet is pumped directly from the lake as does all of the water we use on the boat.

So far everything has worked excellent.

Nice looking toilet there G. Good price too. The ones at West Marine cost the same but don't have the Macerator and other needed accessories. Still need a tank, of course. One of these days, I want to install a real holding tank system. Quite nervous about the concept of drilling the hull, however :?
