CABIN SOLE

Post by sailpsych »

Greetings one and all. Hope all had a good weekend with no accidents.

Noticed a couple of great looking cabin soles on the mods board, but didn't see any location to order any. Can someone steer me in the appropriate direction/course to obtain some good looking teak and holly cabin soles?

Thanks in advance,

I have seen kits in Sail mags to do this but they were not inexpensive.

I myself would like to clean up the area around the engine. Just too many wires cables and fuel lines for my tastes.

This was one reason I didn't want to run shore power to this area.

Good Luck in your search !!

Bruce, Practical Sailor in one of the past few issues had an article on the latest "fake" Teak decking and cabin sole materials. It sounded like they really liked some of the materials (better that the real thing, especially from a maintenance aspect). You might check them out before you decide on your choice of sole material.

I was thinking of doing the same thing...so...why couldn't you just go to HD, buy a box or two of wood flooring, and trim to fit. Never done a floor, never priced the stuff. But I'll bet you can do it all for cheap. I mean how many sq ft are we talking? Not much really. I think I'd rather buy it unfinished (if possible, otherwise sand it down) and finish it to match my other stuff. Throw in some matching trim around the edges and seal it all up real good, it'll look pro.

Agree w/ Dave ... about 20 sq foot box of Pergo, floating on their foam backing ...

Costco has that stuff now too, very inexpensive. But now they're selling the snap-together stuff. I'd be concerned that the potential flex in the cabin sole might cause it to come apart.

Did some further research on environmentally friendly alternatives to real teak. Found a couple to review.

One is: http://www.plasteak.com/boating/plasdeck/plasdeck.html

Another is:

http://www.flexiteek.no/category.php?categoryID=14

Both are much less costly in terms of maintenance and initial outlay. Also, they have the advantage of flexibility, non skid, and installation uses shears to install some of them.

Have requested a sample and it should arrive soon for review.
