Jesse, It was nice meeting you up there. My ride over from Anacortes to Deer Harbor was "interesting". As you recall it was raining (as it did for most of the week). But in Anancortes it wasn't foggy. Wasn't foggy until I got to the islands, that is. Then pea soup! Could see maybe 200 yard...

I have a fixed mount VHF and a handheld VHF. I never use the fixed mount one. If I had to do it again I wouldn't spend the $$ on a fixed mount one and just go with the handheld.

The most important controls IMHO for sail shape and sail power on my 26x are the vang on the main and the genoa cars. I have not found maneuvers to flatten the sail (such as tightening the outhaul, main halyard, or adjustable backstay) to do very much. To depower the sail, adding twist to the main b...

Jesse, I also be launching from Cap Sante on Aug 21 and heading to Deer Harbor. Do you want to meet up and travel together? I am driving up from Portland and hope to be at Anacortes between 10 and 12. My email: faigeld@ohsu.edu I've not been to deer harbor before. But Lopez islander is nice with a g...

Thanks for all the great advice. Washington Park on a Saturday last August was totally full with no place to park. I think I'll try Cap Sante this year. I have reservations at Deer Harbor for the week. My wife does not like staying on board overnight so we are staying on shore on Orcas island. (We'r...

I used the teleflex on my 2001 MacX. The hardest parts were getting the wheel off and drilling the holes for the new parts. I'm not very handy and so it took me about 4 hours to do the job. Did it on the water in her slip. Huge difference in steerability. Great Mod! Great advice from this board when...

Some San Juans Advice

Could get some quick opinions/advice? 1. Has antone launched at Cap Sante in Anacortes and used their lift? How did it go? Is there enough parking? Do you rig on shore or after you launch? Last year there was no avaialbale parking at the park in Anacortes that has the ramp. 2. Any advice as to the b...

I have an inclinometer on my X. Above 30-35 degrees the boat reliably rounds up into the wind. This happens with just Genoa up, too (no main). It's a hard boat to knock down so that it stays down! Most inclinometers only go to 45 degrees. So when people say they are healing at 50 or 70 degrees, whil...

When there has been water in the bilge for my 26X it has always been from one of two places: 1. The plug for the water ballast under the V-berth (not fitting tight enough - when the boat heels water gets into the bilge) 2. The fresh water jug. I still use those 5 gallon jugs and sometimes I don't ge...

The difference between an ordeal and an adventure is your attitude. My wife does not enjoy boating and gets seasick. We have 3 daughters aged 3-11. The couple of times all 5 of us tried to sleep on board have not worked out well. The first year we had the boat we watched the fireworks and planned on...

I almost exclusively single hand and exclusively beach stern to. When single handed, I have found that setting a bow anchor first and then trying to back onto a beach is very difficult and I don't do this any more. I beach first (as described above in my previous post) backing in to about 1-2 feet o...

Don T: I haven't decided when to go yet. I usually go in August. My "crew" (primarily the first-and-only-mate-for-life) prefers to sleep on shore so we will probably rent a condo our house somewhere. Might stay at Smugglers Villa Resort as they have a marina and a pool and the condo's are ...

Beaching in the San Juans

Planning on revisiting the San Juans (Washington) this summer.

Anyone ever beach their boat in the San Juans?

Most of the beaches look rocky.

Shallow Bay on Sucia looks sandy, anyone beach there?

Looking for suggestions!
