The steering on the M is a compleat system. Rack connected to a cable and sleeve, A pinion and housing. I replaced it two month ago after breaking a tooth. The factory replaced the whole thing, contrary to some EXPERTS on this board that insisted that they would not. Comes to learn ya, just because ...

The short answer to your question. 1. The stays on the "M" should be loose so that the mast can rotate freely. 2. The furler has a turn buckle hidden inside the plastic tube you will see a pin with a cotter pin in it. I think that by removing it and raising the tube, you will see the turn ...

tThe way I do it on my 70 HP Suzuki is: Bought at Home depot a garden hose quick dissconnect with a petcock. Screwed it into the pipe thread flush port. Used a little sump pump to pump water from the transom well.
Pump is powered with a cig lighter plug.

Good points for the factory

After stripping my rack and damaging the pinion on my "M" steering, it took one call to my Dealer Inmon yachts in LA(Capt. Mike is great) and the factory replaced both free of charge. Nice people at MacGregor.

The Owl works for me. How ever, I got a string of party pennants at a party supply store $4.50 and this works real nice. makes noise when it's windy. Raised it with the topping lift.

Another thing I did to the linkage is; I added delrin (plastic) bushings and spacers wherever there was metal to metal contact.

Antennas

One more thing to consider. The Coast Guard and other Gov. services use a lot more power and have very high antennas. Case in point. I can hear from Miami...Key West(they may have repeaters) and Ft Lauderdale and they can hear me.
Whip ant. is mounted on Port side aft. Radio 25W.

Older "M" steering

Replaced the rack and pinion on my M A world of difference. The steering can be turned with great ease. If yours is an earlier boat (my hull is #36) and your steering is hard, check the routing of the cabe below. I think that mine had a too sharp of a bend that caused the hard steering all along. I ...
