Re: Raise mast on the water?
If someone already mentioned it, here’s the tip again: If there is any breeze at all while raising the mast while on the water, take your anchor rode and pull it around to the stern cleat while still anchored. The wind will now “help” you raise it. You would be surprised how much.

Re: Honda 50 hp carburetor synchronization
I can close out my thoughts now in this thread after my sea test today. I ran all speeds and up to WOT. All good. A few days ago the synch tool showed a slight sag in the middle cylinder. I followed the directions and they are now all even. I’m at 8” Hg vacuum. But the boat seems as strong as ever. ...

How long have you owned a Macgregor?
How many years have you owned a Mac, of any type? I’ll start. I joined this forum in 2004 and did two years of research. Frank M. and Chip H. were my favorite Mac owners that I listened to. In 2006 this forum lead me to an owner in Maryland that was selling his 1999 Mac X and my Admiral and I drove ...

Re: article in the August Issue of 48 North on MacGregors
I appreciate your posting of the link to this great article! I read, back in the day, everything that Frank wrote and also read back then all the stories from boating snobs who ridiculed him. I have been a 20 year satisfied Mac owner for over 20 years, partially due to Frank. Thanks again for postin...

Re: Honda 50 hp carburetor synchronization
It has been 2 months since I planned to do the carb sync. Life got in the way and today was my first chance to see the boat at the storage yard. Here is the video. All good. Sea test soon.

Is boats.net the best place for Honda genuine parts?
I have always used boats.net to buy my genuine Honda engine parts. I experienced some delays lately and wonder if anyone recommends an alternative for Honda parts.

Timing belt adjustment error in Honda Shop manual 2008 version
I just want to point out an error I found in my 2008 Honda BF50A shop manual. However, the error causes no problem at all, it is just superfluous and I am pedantic, so here goes: Timing belts for many outboards come with the tensioning instructions of installing the new belt per TDC, then rotating t...

Re: Honda 50 hp carburetor synchronization
AD and BeFree and others, Thanks for your sympathy. Let’s make this post today start with a riddle: When are 6 teeth worth $5000 to $10,000? Drum roll…. When the teeth are set incorrectly for a Honda BF50A engine timing belt. 6 teeth “off.” Short story: I fixed my Honda outboard today by readjusting...

Re: Honda 50 hp carburetor synchronization
I learned alot in this topic. When I used my new synch tool this morning, the three carbs were perfectly synched….. however, the vacuum was 7” across the board instead of 16, 20 or more inches. Horrible. So, my last compression test was last spring. Not great readings but ok. Then the inactivity was...

Re: Honda BF50 Rectifier Replacement
Here is one correction that needs to be made. I have been under a misconception about nomenclature of outboard engines (probably all small engines) regarding the word “stator.” I researched the word “stator” and find out that the stator term refers to all coils under the flywheel. Some engines’ stat...

Re: Honda BF50 Rectifier Replacement
Ps- I thought I would explain the picture above of my wiring kluge. There are three wire nuts involved whereas anyone will see only two are needed. I cut the wire too short at the top and had to add another piece. Ha. https://i.postimg.cc/PCX10WYr/IMG-3938.jpg I must warn you that the third connecto...

Re: Honda BF50 Rectifier Replacement
Your new rectifier/regulator will cut out the charging function when rpms get high enough to exceed a certain amount of amps. The circuitry in your replacement device is not as sophisticated as the oem device which had a non-drop-off lead available for the tach. Therefore, your tach output will drop...

Re: Honda 50 hp carburetor synchronization
Thanks dude, Thank you for your advice that I will follow. I found what I think is the same synch tool for $29 American pesos. I will order it. My failures mentioned above were: - the sound-by-ear-thru-tubing method failed due to the noise of the engine drowned out the “hiss” sound. (For some reason...
