I designed, built and put in the 7’10 swing keel on St. Thomas after hitting something ‘big’ that was swimming off Saba Island one night which took out the stock keel, thus resulting in a downwind limping return to the U.S.V.I’s. Old subject, but I think I'd also read that, when a water ballasted Mac heels over, the windward side of the ballast tank rises above the water level, which dramatically increases its effectiveness (almost like canting keels do). Tractor tires have always used calcium chloride which is heavier than water but corrosive, the current material is Beet juice which is environmentally friendly and weighs 11 pounds per gallon vs water which is 8, why not fill the ballast compartment with beet juice?
