Re: Repower and Repair or Sell?
Some of you asked that I post on the classified in this forum if I'm going to list it for sale. Well, here it is. https://macgregorsailors.com/classifieds/boats-for-sale/macgregor-26-xm/2004-macgregor-26m_i479 I have no idea what an engineless 26M is worth. I just know that I don't have the time or ...

Re: Repower and Repair or Sell?
Thanks Russ and Over Easy for the kind words and suggestions. Russ: The engine is toast - already thrown away. #1 cylinder was filling with water and it wasn't from the seals. Must be a crack in the block. I agree trailering in the current condition would be dicey. Brakes are broken though I figure ...

Re: Repower and Repair or Sell?
An update to my trade-off on this 26M. Pondering if the ROI is worth it to haul it down to Florida and fix it up there. I don't even own a tow vehicle at the moment, though a friend with a truck is willing to help me move it. Details below. I'm getting divorced and got laid off from my job. We just ...

Re: Repower and Repair or Sell?
Gelcoat looks better than mine. These boats used poor gelcoat due to environmental regs, or just to save money. Unless you find a garage kept northern boat, all the M models at this point will be having similar issues though maybe not as bad. I intend to re gelcoat parts of mine. I can use the best...

Re: Repower and Repair or Sell?
Thank you for all of the suggestions. I'll spend some time putting together a plan and budget then decide if I'm going to move forward with fixing her up. Do you have any suggestions as to chasing down the source of leaks above the waterline? When we get heavy rains I end up with quite a bit of wate...

Re: Repower and Repair or Sell?
Is it worth the investment? Thoughts or suggestions? Not $15-20k. You could find a better boat for that kind of money; and be on the water much quicker. Having said that, the reality of boating is; if it’s not brand new, you’re going to need to spend money and time on it. So, your hands are going t...

Repower and Repair or Sell?
I'm at a bit of a crossroads with my second hand 2004 26M. :macm: In a nutshell, I need to decide to invest what it will take to make it "good enough" for me to be happy with it or get rid of it and just shop for another boat someday, even if it is another 26M. I enjoy the versatility of t...

Re: Winch Handle Holder?
I store mine inside the companionway. There's a circular hold behind the speaker that is not covered. It came that way from the previous owner. I've noticed that in almost all conditions I can sheet in the jib / genoa without a winch handle just by pulling the tail of the line and then taking the ot...

Re: Propeller Selection for 26M w/ 90 HP Honda Outboard
FWIW - I may try a 14 x 11 at some time in the future. If I do that I will post results. The existing prop has some minor dings, etc. which helps me justify to my wife to try a new prop... :D It's on the order or 1 boat buck... I wouldn't recommend that. The tach/rpm math says you're already at 6kR...

Re: Propeller Selection for 26M w/ 90 HP Honda Outboard
Enjoy, just make sure your centerboard and rudders are secured full up. Replace that centerboard line pre-emptively. With a 90HP, it's bad if the board drops at speed. Yes, the centerboard line concern crossed my mind as well. The existing lines are only 2 years old, so perhaps will replace at the ...

Re: Propeller Selection for 26M w/ 90 HP Honda Outboard
Your 50hp was a 3 cylinder, the 90 is a 4 cylinder. The tach works by counting ignition pulses so every 3 pulses was a revolution on the 50 but you have 4 pulses per revolution on your new engine. Your tach is under-counting your rpms by about 25%. As far as I know the OEM tach that was used by the...

Re: Propeller Selection for 26M w/ 90 HP Honda Outboard
Unlikely to be the wiring of the tach: I just looked up the BF50 and BF90 meter wiring diagrams and they have the same 5 wires, with the same color coding. Would be odd for a pro shop to make that mistake. We can possibly eliminate the RPM gauge as a problem if we consider the speeds you were attai...

Re: Propeller Selection for 26M w/ 90 HP Honda Outboard
I will check the throttle cable. The seller is also a local marine mechanic and a highly respected one, so i didn't even think to doubt his work. I'll take the cowling off and look check it out this afternoon. Throttle arm had a small mount of play in it. Without tweaking it underway I have know wa...

Re: Propeller Selection for 26M w/ 90 HP Honda Outboard
Your performance data suggests a problem other than the prop. That is fantastic feedback! Thank you! I will check the throttle cable.
