Rocna install pics now up (and heavy-duty bow cleat)
Apologies, I have not been around for awhile, and hence did not respond in a timely manner to your questions. I've just posted a couple of pics under "mods". Re: the well-put question re: SS and aluminum, I'm just going to see how it goes. Having fished an aluminum vessel in Western Alaska...

very good (and safe) heaters and stoves
Here's a very, very good mac heater. The Wallas 1300. http://www.scanmarineusa.com/wallas_furnaces.html Safe (coaxial vent to overboard), efficient, quiet (near-silent?). I love it. It's up in the vee-birth area, mounted to the bulkhead just fwd of the head. I like it so much, I may replace the alco...

my slow, quiet, 140 ;^)
I've got one of those 140s. I never go pounding along at very high speed. At moderate speeds the motor is comfortably quiet, not wound-out. Sometimes, when it's quite glassy out, I do open her up a bit. Rarely ever WOT. In Alaska we often carry more stuff. We just tend to be more heavily loaded with...

alaska macs
glide47, hello there. That demon may be me! I live over here on Belmont behind West High (Anchorage). Oddly, here to the South of Westchester Lagoon, on USDA climate charts, we are in a postage stamp sized "banana belt", one climate zone warmer than most most of Anchorage. The hillside is ...

140 with modified upper cowl
I went with the Suzuki 140. The 140 cowl has a weird hump at the top rear of upper cowling. That hump precludes tilting up under the M's helm seat. It's easily changed out (two screws?) with the non-humpy plastic piece from a 115. As is, the (now modified) cowling on the 140 will not quite reach ful...

load rated tires
When possible, I always upgrade to LT ("light truck"), or "load rated" tires. Too many SUVs come with "passenger car" tires, with softer side-walls and 40# pressure limits. A "load rated" tire with an "E" rating will have a ten-ply side-wall *equival...

Frank, thanks for the tip about other possible sources of play in the system. I crawled around under there a bit and played with all the links, but I'll certainly have another look. Duane, I'm familiar with cable steering and helm feel in sailboats. We are usually refering to a different type of cab...

Making some progress on the above mentioned Rocna install. Removed all the forward deck hardware between the chainplate for the forestay and the footings for the bow rail/pulpit. Basically this consisted of the two little Mac bow cleats and the BWY anchor roller going bye-bye. Yesterday I fabricated...
